Inleiding

Introduction

Iron RAILWAY VIADUCT with associated RAILINGS, as part of the station detailed in Art Nouveau (monument no. 19786) built circa 1906 according to the design of D.A.N. Margadant over the Kruisweg in connection with the raising of the railway line. The cast-iron columns were manufactured by Deventer Iron Foundry.

Description

The iron railway viaduct consists of two rows of cast-iron columns on either side of the roadway of the Kruisweg, upon which the main beams rest that support the railway facility and platforms above. The columns are cast in one piece and consist of a square base plate, an octagonal plinth, a conical shaft decorated at two points with a band, and a capital. The bridge deck consists of H-beams with concrete in the spaces between. The components are fastened to each other with screw-bolt connections and rivet connections. Between the columns is an iron railing which is also placed on top of the bridge and on the outer abutment. Between the column rows and the side walls of the tunnel is on both sides a cycle path. The inner (station-side) abutment is connected by means of a masoned wall to the station building. The abutment is on this side executed with a rounded corner and the outer abutment is sloped and provided with ashlar accents. The walls of the tunnel are constructed on an ashlar plinth in white glazed brick.

Valuation

The railway viaduct from circa 1906 is of general importance owing to its cultural, construction and architectural-historical value as a well-preserved early twentieth-century infrastructure work and as a historically functional component of Haarlem station according to the design of architect D.A.N. Margadant (monument no. 19786). The viaduct has situational value owing to its striking location over the Kruisweg.
