Inleiding

Description
Introduction
A SCHOOL BUILDING designed by D. Greiner that was built in 1935 as an extension of the Haarlem Domestic Science and Industrial School built in 1903 by J.F. Hamersfeld and S. Roog, which was remodelled by Greiner in connection with the extension. The school building is bounded by the Schneevoogtstraat (north), the Kamperstraat (east), the Bakkerstraat (south) and the Voorhelmstraat (west). The building stands completely free only on the south and west sides. On the other sides the building stands mostly behind residential buildings from around 1900. From the 1903 building only parts of the former front facade on the Schneevoogtstraat and some rear spaces were preserved. This structure was integrated into the new building. The appearance of the school is chiefly determined by the new construction from 1935 in a Business-Expressionist style. The austere facade composition and the application of large window surfaces made possible by the reinforced concrete skeleton are combined with decorative elements from the Amsterdam school.
Description
A school built on an irregular ground plan consisting of a varied stepped arrangement of rectangular volumes, of which the volume directly adjoining the old building has four storeys and the other volumes three storeys. Apart from the composite roof over the old building, all roofs are flat. The stepped arrangement arose because the volumes are extended at various locations. The construction consists of a skeleton of reinforced concrete. The masonry is mostly built in a flat yellow brick, above a low recessed plinth in dark red brick. Parts of the masonry are plastered with a rough silver-grey plaster, the so-called "terra nova grana".
On the Schneevoogtstraat side (north) only the old front facade of the Domestic Science and Industrial School and the building volume to the west of it stand at the street. The building volume to the east of the old front facade stands behind residential buildings. The old front facade has three storeys, a symmetrical arrangement of three window bays with a central projection under a small stepped gable. Large window sections display the old function of a school building. Above the former main entrance the inscription: DOMESTIC SCIENCE AND INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. The building volume to the west of the old building (west block) is set back several metres relative to the street line. This difference is bridged by a transverse wall of four storeys which projects further forward relative to the street line and which clearly separates old from new. The west block is symmetrical, free-standing on three sides and has three storeys. The west block has a depth of ten window bays and a width of nine window bays. The windows are located in horizontal rows at short intervals. The west block borders the Z-shaped Voorhelmstraat on the west and south sides. The west block contains a central corridor (east-west) with two classrooms on each side. The corridor leads via a small single-storey extension on the west side into a stairwell. The westernmost classrooms stand perpendicular to the central corridor. This is expressed on the exterior in two large extended volumes. These extended volumes all have flat projecting roofs.
The construction behind and to the east of the old front facade consists on the exterior mainly of old masonry with wooden multi-pane windows. Only the wall running perpendicular to the Schneevoogtstraat (north-south) of the central stairwell is new. This wall has a transparent character due to the many vertical windows and vertical window rows with leaded glass.
On the Z-shaped Voorhelmstraat side (south and west) the west block borders on the volume which steps forward and projects upward in building height at the level of five storeys in which the central stairwell is located. This volume manifests itself from the Voorhelmstraat as a high pivotal point between the west block and the stepped-down construction to the south of it. In contrast to the west block, the tall volume also has irregularly placed windows and window strips in various sizes and shapes, including round ones, which in a number of cases are placed across corners. This block also differs from the rest of the construction in its partial plastering. Also noteworthy is the prominent positioning of the director's office with a vertical window row and a cylindrical corner window diagonally above the main entrance. The stepped-down construction to the south of the tall volume forms a transition with three storeys to the adjoining residential building.
On the Kamperstraat side (east) there is a wall with an arched gate belonging to the architecture of the school between the residential buildings. Via this gate one reaches a courtyard with bicycle parking. The rear entrance of the school lies opposite the gate. The school building manifests itself on the east side as a building mass that rises from south to north from three to five storeys. The highest section is entirely plastered with terra nova stucco.
The steel windows and external doors are all original and fitted with multi-pane glazing bars. The interior is still largely original. Noteworthy components include the stairwell with associated leaded glass, the round windows with leaded glass in which the motif of a bee is incorporated ("industrious bee" in relation to the domestic science school) and the blue-glazed window sill tiles.
Valuation
The former domestic science school is of general interest from an architectural-historical and cultural-historical perspective due to its special main form and detailing as well as due to its appearance as a school building for vocational education in which contemporary educational views on the beneficial effects of daylight entry into the classrooms were optimally applied. Furthermore, the work is of importance as part of the oeuvre of D. Greiner.
