Inleiding
In het vierde kwart van de 19de eeuw in Neo-Renaissance stijl gebouwd BLOK VAN DRIE HERENHUIZEN. Het blok herenhuizen dat als architectonische éénheid onder één kap is gebouwd, vormt een onderdeel van de gesloten gevelwand aan de oostzijde van de Kleine Houtweg en ligt recht tegenover het Frederikspark.
NB. De achtergevels en de interieurs zijn vanwege diverse wijzigingen van ondergeschikte betekenis.
Omschrijving
Het blok van drie herenhuizen is drie bouwlagen hoog en maakt onderdeel uit van een gesloten gevelwand. Het blok wordt van de openbare weg gescheiden door een circa één meter brede hardstenen stoep die wordt beeïndigd door een groen geverfd smeedijzeren hekwerk.
Het blok herenhuizen is gebouwd op een rechthoekig grondplan en wordt gedekt door een dwars, afgeknot schilddak bekleed met zwarte Hollandse pannen en shingles. Het pand is opgetrokken in rode baksteen, waarbij de lage pui van de voorgevel wit is gepleiserd met daarin een natuursteenmotief.
De voorgevel (west) is drie traveeën breed. Elke travee omvat één herenhuis voorzien van drie vensteassen. De middelste travee is enigszins risalerend en wordt boven de houten geprofileerde kroonlijst met fries afgesloten door een brede in baksteen opgetrokken dakkapel met een halfrond houten fronton. De overige twee traveeën worden boven de kroonlijst afgesloten door kleinere dakkapellen, eveneens met een halfrond houten fronton en houten wangen ter weerszijden. De kroonlijst boven langs de gevel wordt gedragen door houten rijk bewerkte consoles.
De voorgevel kent regelmatig geplaatste getoogde houten vensters. Deels zijn deze vensters schuifvensters (al dan niet met een T-naald) en deels dubbele openslaande vensters. De sluit- en aanzetstenen van de strekken boven de vensters op de verdiepingen zijn gepleisterd en versierd. Op de eerste verdieping bezitten de vensters onderaan een fraai vormgegeven gietijzeren horizontale afrastering. Bij Kleine Houtweg 71 bezitten de ramen op de begane grond groen geverfde houten jalouzieën.
In het midden van elke travee bevindt zich ter hoogte van de eerste verdieping een houten balkon gedragen door rijk bewerkte consoles van stucwerk. De balkons bezitten een sierlijk gesmeed ijzeren hekwerk. De entree van elk der drie herenhuizen bestaat uit een dubbele houten voordeur met gietijzeren sierroosters. De entrees zijn niet symmetrisch in het midden van de traveeën gelegen, maar in de derde, zesde en zevende vensteras.

BLOCK OF THREE GENTLEMAN'S HOUSES built in the fourth quarter of the 19th century in Neo-Renaissance style. The block of gentleman's houses, which is built as an architectural unit under a single roof, forms part of the closed facade wall on the east side of the Kleine Houtweg and lies directly opposite the Frederikspark.
NB. The rear facades and the interiors are of secondary importance due to various alterations.
Description
The block of three gentleman's houses is three storeys high and forms part of a closed facade wall. The block is separated from the public road by a circa one-metre-wide stone terrace which is terminated by a green-painted wrought-iron fence.
The block of gentleman's houses is erected on a rectangular ground plan and is covered by a transverse, clipped hipped roof clad with black Dutch tiles and shingles. The building is constructed in red brick, with the low shop front of the front facade plastered white with a natural stone motif within it.
The front facade (west) is three bays wide. Each bay comprises one gentleman's house provided with three window axes. The middle bay projects slightly and is topped above the wooden profiled cornice with frieze by a broad half-hipped roof dormer constructed in brick with a semicircular wooden pediment. The other two bays are topped above the cornice by smaller dormers, likewise with a semicircular wooden pediment and wooden cheeks on either side. The cornice along the top of the facade is supported by wooden richly worked consoles.
The front facade has regularly placed arched wooden windows. Some of these windows are sash windows (with or without a T-bar) and some are paired French doors. The reveals and jamb stones of the lintels above the windows on the upper storeys are rendered and decorated. On the first floor the windows have a finely designed cast-iron horizontal railing at the bottom. At Kleine Houtweg 71 the windows on the ground floor have green-painted wooden jalousies.
In the middle of each bay, at the level of the first floor, there is a wooden balcony supported by richly worked stucco consoles. The balconies have decorative wrought-iron railings. The entrance to each of the three gentleman's houses consists of a paired wooden front door with cast-iron ornamental grilles. The entrances are not symmetrically located in the middle of the bays, but in the third, sixth and seventh window axes.
Valuation
Block of three late-nineteenth-century gentleman's houses of general importance due to its cultural- and architectural-historical value as a block of residential buildings designed as a unit and also well preserved in Neo-Renaissance style, as well as due to its defining location in the facade wall along the Kleine Houtweg, directly opposite the Frederikspark.
