Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
VILLA situated at the corner of Raamsingel and Koninginneweg, built in 1900 according to a design by Haarlem architect J. van den Ban. The villa is situated from an urban planning perspective in the axis of Wilhelminastraat where it forms a visual closure on the south side. The building is currently in use as a residential building (1993) for which purpose it has been divided into several apartments.
Description
Villa with tower on an irregular ground plan and consisting of basement, bel étage, upper storey and attic storey, the last of which is situated in a roof composed of intersecting gabled roofs which has lost its original covering and is now covered with grey shingles. The tower situated at the front of the building (N) has three storeys under an attached, overhanging and steeply pitched tent roof covered with slate in Maas bond and crowned by a finial. The elevation is determined by a rectangular volume with long roof situated parallel to Raamsingel, where the tower as a projecting element forms part, and a rectangular volume perpendicular to Raamsingel with stepped gable and transverse roof. The front elevation of this latter volume is bay-windowed up to the attic storey and projects forward like the tower with respect to the volume situated parallel to Raamsingel. The volume perpendicular to Raamsingel is in fact L-shaped and thus also forms the rear side of the villa. The villa has on the south-east side a projecting section facing the garden, consisting of basement, bel-étage and ground level. At the rear (S) at the height of the bel-étage there is a continuous wooden balcony. The monumental main entrance, provided with a shed roof on stone columns and semi-circular fanlights, is situated at the front of the tower at street level. In the vestibule a broad stair leads to the level of the bel étage. The villa is mainly constructed in red brick which at various points such as sub-sills, drip mouldings, entrance section and plinth is alternated with ashlar stone. The brickwork also contains dark grey lime-sand brick and yellow brick, among others in lintels, relieving arches and between the windows. For decoration, tile mosaic has been applied in the reveals under the relieving arches. Tile mosaic is, however, mainly to be found in the tower where, among other things, the wall surfaces under the windows and between the consoles have been decorated in this manner.
The windows are all in wood, consist of single and multi-paned frames and still largely possess the original glazing bars and leaded glass in the fanlights.
Valuation
The monumental villa with tower is of general importance owing to its situation and its well-preserved main form and detailing from an urban planning and architectural-historical perspective, and furthermore from a cultural-historical perspective as an example of rich villa construction from the period around 1900.
