Inleiding
De KlokhuisTOREN dateert uit 1918 en is in opdracht van de drukkersfirma Enschedé gebouwd naar ontwerp van de architect D.E.L. van den Arend. De toren is een reconstructie van de 15de-eeuwse klokhuistoren die op ongeveer dezelfde locatie stond en in 1804 is afgebroken. De toren is beeldbepalend gesitueerd in de as van de Riviervismarkt en vormt een onderdeel van de gevelwand van het Klokhuisplein. Deze bestaat voornamelijk uit panden die ooit behoorden tot het Enschedécomplex, dat in 1993 grotendeels is gesloopt. De toren ligt iets terug van de rooilijn aan de straat, waardoor de onderzijde gedeeltelijk schuil gaat achter het pand Klokhuisplein 3 en de bijbehorende poort (monnr.19451).
Omschrijving
De toren heeft een vierkant grondplan en is enigszins taps toelopend opgetrokken over vier bouwlagen onder een tentdak met uitzwenkende dakvoet. De gevels zijn grotendeels bekleed met leien en ook het dak is met leien gedekt. Aan de voorzijde bevat de toren boven de begane grond 5 stolpramen met bovenlicht met kleine roedenverdeling. In de eerste bouwlaag een en daarboven twee maal twee. Ook in de achtergevel bevinden zich op de verdiepingen vensters. Het uitzwenkende dak wordt ondersteund door geprofileerde consoles en rondom bevindt zich een fries met spitsboogvormige spaarvelden die zijn voorzien van tracering. Enkele van deze spaarvelden zijn voorzien van een raam. In drie zijden van het dak vier oorspronkelijke dakkapellen onder uitkragende schilddakjes en op de nok een ijzeren windvaan.
Waardering
De Klokhuistoren uit 1918 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als eigentijdse reconstructie van de 15de-eeuwse klokhuistoren en als zeldzaam oorspronkelijk onderdeel van het Enschedécomplex. De toren heeft grote situationele waarde vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging in de gevelwand van het Klokhuisplein in de historische binnenstad van Haarlem.
