Inleiding

Rond 1880 in eclectische trant gebouwde VRIJSTAANDE VILLA.

Introduction

A DETACHED VILLA built around 1880 in eclectic style. The property is situated on the north side of the Hazepaterslaan.

The detached villa is part of the plan for the layout and development of the Hazepatersveld, designed in 1873 by L.P. Zocher. The Hazepatersveld was a meadow, located between the Dreef, Hazepaterslaan and Wagenweg, which shortly before 1873 had been purchased by the municipality of Haarlem from the Mennonite congregation. The municipality of Haarlem intended to transform the meadow into a villa park and for this purpose commissioned the firm of L.P. Zocher's father, J.D. Zocher & Co., to draw up a plan for the layout and development of the Hazepatersveld.

In this layout plan, which was completed in 1873, a contrast is visible between on the one hand the formal, urban layout as was envisioned for the Floraplein and the Dreef and on the other hand the landscape layout of the Florapark and part of the Hazepaterslaan.

In total, fifty residential houses were projected in the plan. In the eventual implementation, however, fifty-six would be realized, which represents a certain densification of the original design. First, the urban-looking eclectic buildings along the Floraplein were constructed (1876-'77), followed by the neo-Renaissance residential blocks along the Dreef (1880 and 1882). The Florapark and the western part of the Hazepaterslaan were only built with detached villas in the period after 1880, after the park layout, designed in English landscape style, had been completed here.

This detached villa on the Hazepaterslaan thus belongs to that part of the villa park that was developed in English landscape style. The park layout is however no longer (as) clearly recognizable along the Hazepaterslaan as it is in the Florapark.

The boundary fences between the public road and the plots on the Hazepaterslaan, Dreef and Florapark were designed in one uniform style when the villa park was laid out. These original boundary fences are still present at all properties, whether or not partly rebuilt.

Description

Detached villa consisting of basement, raised ground floor, first floor and attic storey. The whole is built on a rectangular ground plan and is covered by a truncated hipped roof clad with black cross tiles.

The property is constructed in red brick on a natural stone plinth. The facades of the property are decorated throughout with details in plasterwork, such as continuous horizontal bands of plasterwork. The sill and springer stones in the courses above the windows all around, with the exception of the rear facade, are also executed in ornamental plasterwork. The courses themselves consist of red and beige sandstone. Below the wooden cornice there is a continuous broad profiled plaster band. Along the front facade this plaster band, situated below the roof line, is decorated.

The front facade (south) is particularly richly decorated with plasterwork. The basement is here completely rendered in natural stone motif. Between the basement and the raised ground floor and between the raised ground floor and the first floor, there is a rendered cordon line along the front facade. The front facade, four window bays wide, is further articulated by rendered pilaster formations. The pilasters at the level of the raised ground floor are executed in rustication, while the pilasters at the level of the first floor have a shaft with a spared field and are crowned by an Ionic capital. Below the windows on the first floor there is a rectangular panel of plasterwork decorated with half balusters.

In the second window bay from the left, the recessed entrance is situated in the front facade. This entrance consists of a wooden front door with wrought-iron ornamental grille, accessible by means of a natural stone staircase with ten steps. The windows in the front facade are all wooden sash windows, on the first floor provided with a T-profile. The two side facades of the property (east and west) are two and three window bays wide respectively. The side facades have, with the exception of a few small windows in the middle window bay of the west facade, only blind windows.

The rear facade (north) is four window bays wide and features, among other things, two pairs of wooden sash windows coupled together. The left window bay projects above the raised ground floor.

The original garden surrounding the property is only partially still present.

The villa still possesses the original boundary fence on the street side. This boundary fence consists of a low brick wall topped by a hardstone plinth, with above it wrought-iron ornamental fencing painted dark green. The boundary fence is interrupted at two points for an entrance. These entrances consist of a single and a double opening grille. The opening dark green painted grilles are marked on both sides by a dark green painted fluted iron column on a hardstone base. The Corinthian capital of the column is crowned by a gilt pinecone.

Valuation

Villa of general interest due to architectural-historical and cultural-historical value, as well as due to group value as part of the villa park that has been realized since 1876 on the site of the Hazepatersveld.
