Inleiding
Door Henri A. Scholtz Jzn. in 1898 ontworpen STANDBEELD van de schilder Frans Hals. Het standbeeld, dat wordt omgeven door een ovaalvormig bloemperk, werd in 1900 aan de zuidoostzijde van het in 1880-'81 aangelegde Florapark geplaatst.
Het standbeeld van Frans Hals kwam tot stand op initiatief van "het comité voor de oprichting van het monument voor Frans Hals". Dit comité werd in 1895 door de vooraanstaande Haarlemmer J. Krol Kzn., die zelf aan het Florapark woonde, opgericht met als doel gelden bijeen te krijgen voor het oprichten van een standbeeld. In 1897 had men het benodigde geld bijeen en werd er een prijsvraag uitgeschreven voor het ontwerpen van een standbeeld. Uit de 16 ontwerpen die hierop binnenkwamen werd in december 1898 de eerste prijs toegekend aan de Amsterdamse beeldhouwer Henri A. Scholtz jz. Scholtz realiseerde zijn ontwerp in 1899-1900 en op 14 juni 1900 werd het standbeeld door koningin Wilhelmina op zijn huidige plek in het Florapark onthuld.
In 1976 werd het bloemenperk rondom het beeld, naar aanleiding van een verbreding van de weg alhier, verkleind.
Omschrijving
Het in 1899-1900 gerealiseerde standbeeld, dat in totaal zo'n 7 meter hoog is, bestaat uit een vierkante, naar beneden toe trapsgewijs uitlopende, sokkel van geelkleurig Beiers graniet met daarop een in brons uitgevoerd beeld van de schilder Frans Hals. Het beeld geeft Frans Hals in staande houding en blootshoofds weer, met in zijn linkerhand een schilderspalet en kwasten en zijn rechterhand rustend op een schildersezel. Ter weerszijden van de sokkel (noord- en zuidkant) bevinden zich twee zittende vrouwenfiguren - eveneens van brons - voorstellende "Flora" en de "schilderkunst". Aan de oost- en westzijde van de sokkel is een bronzen palmtak aangebracht, met aan de oostzijde boven deze palmtak de tekst: "Frans Hals, 1594-1668". De bronzen beelden zijn, evenals de palmtakken, gegoten in de gieterij van Verbeit te Brussel.
Het standbeeld van Frans Hals (de sokkel met de drie bronzen beelden) staat in een ovaalvormig bloemenperk dat is gelegen aan de zuidoostzijde van het Florapark, op het kruispunt van twee wegen. Het ovaalvormig bloemenperk wordt omrasterd door een laag smeedijzeren hekwerk in Jugendstil, dat rust op een natuurstenen plint.
Waardering

Designed by Henri A. Scholtz Jzn. in 1898, STATUE of the painter Frans Hals. The statue, which is surrounded by an oval-shaped flower bed, was placed in 1900 on the south-east side of the Florapark, which was laid out in 1880-'81.
The statue of Frans Hals came about on the initiative of "the committee for the establishment of the monument for Frans Hals". This committee was established in 1895 by the prominent Haarlem resident J. Krol Kzn., who himself lived at the Florapark, with the aim of raising funds for erecting a statue. In 1897 the necessary funds had been raised and a competition was announced for the design of a statue. Of the 16 designs submitted, in December 1898 the first prize was awarded to the Amsterdam sculptor Henri A. Scholtz Jzn. Scholtz realised his design in 1899-1900 and on 14 June 1900 the statue was unveiled by Queen Wilhelmina at its present location in the Florapark.

Description
The statue, realised in 1899-1900 and standing some 7 metres high in total, consists of a square base, tapering in stepped fashion towards the bottom, of yellow-coloured Bavarian granite, upon which stands a bronze figure of the painter Frans Hals. The figure depicts Frans Hals standing and bareheaded, with a painter's palette and brushes in his left hand and his right hand resting on an easel. On either side of the base (north and south sides) are two seated female figures - also of bronze - representing "Flora" and "Painting". On the east and west sides of the base a bronze palm frond has been placed, and on the east side above this palm frond is the text: "Frans Hals, 1594-1668". The bronze figures are, like the palm fronds, cast in the foundry of Verbeit in Brussels.
The statue of Frans Hals (the base with the three bronze figures) stands in an oval-shaped flower bed located on the south-east side of the Florapark, at the intersection of two roads. The oval-shaped flower bed is surrounded by low wrought-iron railings in Jugendstil, which rest on a natural stone plinth.
Valuation
Statue of the painter Frans Hals, created in 1899-1900, of general importance owing to its artistic and cultural-historical value as a tribute to one of the Netherlands' most renowned seventeenth-century painters.
