Inleiding

Introduction

In 1880, built after a design by architect A. van der Steur jr., a BLOCK OF FOUR TOWNHOUSES. The residential block is located on the west side of the Dreef, north of the eastern entrance to the Florapark, and was built in the style of neo-French Renaissance and Eclecticism. At present (1993) all residences are in use as office space.

The block of townhouses is part of the plan for the layout and development of the Hazepatersveld designed in 1873 by L.P. Zocher. The Hazepatersveld was a meadow, situated between the Dreef, Hazepaterslaan and Wagenweg, which shortly before 1873 had been purchased by the municipality of Haarlem from the Mennonite congregation. The municipality of Haarlem intended to transform the meadow into a villa park and for this purpose commissioned the firm of L.P. Zocher's father, J.D. Zocher & Co., to design a plan for the layout and development of the Hazepatersveld.

In this layout plan, which was completed in 1873, a contrast is visible between on the one hand the formal, urban layout as conceived for the Floraplein and the Dreef and on the other hand the landscape design of the Florapark and a part of the Hazepaterslaan.

In total, fifty residences were projected in the plan. In the final execution, however, fifty-six would be realized, resulting in a certain densification of the original design. First came the urban-looking eclectic development along the Floraplein (1876-'77), followed by the neo-Renaissance residential blocks along the Dreef (1880 and 1882). The Florapark and the western part of the Hazepaterslaan were only built with detached villas in the period after 1880, after the park layout designed in English landscape style had been completed there.

The two blocks of townhouses along the Dreef effectively mark the eastern entrance to the Florapark. One block (Dreef 24-30) is situated north of this entrance, the other block (Dreef 32-36) lies south of the eastern entrance to the Florapark.

The boundary fences between the public road and the plots on the Dreef, Hazepaterslaan and Florapark were designed in a uniform style when the villa park was laid out. These original boundary fences are still present at all properties, partly or wholly rebuilt.

Description

A residential block situated directly on the street, comprising four townhouses, of four storeys: ground floor, first floor, second floor and attic storey. The whole is built on a fundamentally rectangular ground plan and is covered by three separate roof structures. The three roof structures, consisting of truncated hipped roofs clad with grey Dutch tiles, divide the residential block into three building volumes. The left and right building volumes (each comprising one townhouse) are slightly projecting in relation to the middle building volume, which comprises two townhouses.

The residential block is built in red brick. Along the front facade the plinth is clad with natural stone. The block is richly decorated with plasterwork, particularly in the front facade. In the front facade, among other things the entire ground floor is plastered and there are decorations of plasterwork throughout the front facade in the style of neo-French Renaissance. Horizontal bands of plasterwork have been applied running around the facades. Just beneath the profiled wooden cornice is a wide plastered band running around it containing plasterwork consoles that support the cornice.

The front facade (east) has a regular rhythm of window bays, with the window bays containing the entrances slightly projecting. The projecting sections of the front facade are marked on both sides by pilaster arrangements running over all storeys. The pilasters on the ground floor are plastered in natural stone motif, the pilasters on the first floor have a Doric capital and the pilasters on the second floor are finished with an Ionic capital. The window bays containing the entrances are richly worked with plasterwork. The entrances (four in total) are thus marked by plastered semicircular pediments broken by a cartouche with a lion's head. The pediments are supported by plastered Doric pilasters. Between the pilasters and the pediment is a plastered and decorated architrave. At the left and right entrance, in this architrave is a plasterwork cartouche bearing the text "ANNO 1880" and at the two middle houses also a cartouche with relief. The windows above the entrances are also marked by pilaster arrangements of plasterwork and finished with a semicircular arch (first floor) or a semicircular pediment (second floor) of plasterwork. These projecting window bays are completed above the cornice by a brick roof dormer. These dormers with neo-Renaissance elements are original and are flanked, among other things, by plastered wing pieces. The two dormers in the slightly recessed middle building volume are connected to each other by means of an extension beneath a parabolic helmet roof. On top of this roof with running roof tiles is a decorative wrought ironwork.

The windows in the front facade consist among other things of wooden casement windows and wooden sash windows, varying in form and size per storey. The doors in the front facade are double wooden doors, some still with wrought iron decorative grilles in front of the glazing.

The side and rear facades of the residential block are executed more soberly than the front facade. In the side facades, beside various types of wooden windows and doors, there are also some blind windows. The rear facade (west) is slightly built out at the corners and likewise has various types of windows and doors executed in wood. In some places the rear facade is slightly modified and adapted to the current office function of the property.

Against the left side facade (south) of the residential block is a single-storey garage under a flat roof. This garage was perhaps built as a carriage house at the same time as the townhouse block and in a later period also received an entrance on the rear side (west). The interiors of the townhouse block are still partly intact. The original gardens at the houses have meanwhile been converted into a car park.

On the left and right sides of the townhouse block, along the street, the original boundary fence is still present. This boundary fence consists of a low brick wall topped with a sandstone plinth, with wrought ironwork above it. On both sides of the property the boundary fence is interrupted by an entrance. These entrances consist of double swinging wrought iron gates marked on both sides by a fluted iron column on a sandstone base. The Corinthian capital of the column is crowned by a pine cone.

Valuation

A block of four townhouses dating from 1880, a combination of neo-French Renaissance and Eclecticism style of general significance due to its architectural-historical and cultural-historical value, as well as due to its ensemble value as part of the villa park that was realized from 1876 onwards on the site of the Hazepatersveld.
