The register's description

Omschrijving

Description

Built on a U-shaped ground plan, former MAIN BUILDING of the orphanage consisting of five adjoining volumes, four tower-like elements and a central originally double passage in symmetrical arrangement through which boys and girls were strictly separated. The building volumes executed in red brick and grey natural stone contain mainly two storeys under combined roof trusses with predominantly equal roof-eave height at the front (south) and a lower roof-eave at the rear (north). The roofs are covered with red Dutch tiles. The octagonal spires of the four octagonal turrets are covered with red slate, the spires of the roof dormers with slate in Maas bond. The spires are crowned by worked weathervanes. The eight corners of the spires are clad with lead. The central axis is formed by a double passage connecting the street with the set-back main volumes. The double passage has two arched entrances at the street level, each set in a stepped gable. Above the left entrance (west) is inscribed in sandstone REFORMED ORPHANAGE and above the right entrance ANNO 1908. The fork-shaped connection with the set-back building volumes is marked by low octagonal tower-like elements. The originally double passage consists of two arcades separated from each other by means of a continuous wall, now closed with windows. Centrally behind the passage stands the middle building body with high central stepped gable which has a clockface in the top and which is crowned by a seated lion. On either side of the middle building body stand L-shaped building volumes which in the extension of the middle building body contain four window bays and after the inner corner five window bays. The middle of these five window bays have monumental entrances in triumphal arch motif. The facade surface with the five window bays transitions towards Olieslagerslaan into corner volumes which are set back towards the passage. The setback is marked by high octagonal tower-like elements. The corner volumes are on the courtyard side the width of one window bay and on the street side the width of five window bays.

The complex is for the most part fitted with cross windows with small multi-pane glazing bars in the four lights. The doors consist mainly of vertical panels with wrought-iron fittings. On either side of the double entrance section there is a boundary fence executed in red brick and natural stone with iron railings.

Valuation

The former orphanage is of general importance by virtue of the architecture-historical and cultural-historical values already mentioned in the complex description.
