Inleiding

Introduction

The ADMINISTRATION BUILDING originally contained a cellular church which occupied the height of the current two upper storeys. The current situation arose after removal of this church space whose seating was housed in a rising arrangement of 142 individual wooden cells. During a renovation in 1949 the cells disappeared and a floor was inserted in the high space.

Description

Administration building built on a rectangular ground plan consisting of three storeys under a shallow-pitched saddle roof which is decorated at the corners and ridge points with acroteria. The covering consists of mastic. The gutters are supported on both long sides by wooden brackets. The bases of the gable ends rest at both end sides on wooden consoles placed in pairs. The brickwork is built above a hardstone plinth in red brick which decoratively connects the hardstone sills of the windows on ground and first floor as a toothed pattern. The toothed pattern is always between band decoration in red facing brick. Red facing brick is also used in the relieving arches. The combination of toothed pattern and facing brick is also found under the gutters and runs in steps under the gable ends. The spandrels under the relieving arches and between the windows of the second and third storeys consist of sandstone plates. The bases of the relieving arches are connected all around by band decoration in facing brick. The floor heights can be traced by the positioning of wrought-iron wall anchors. The front facade (W) has three window axes, both side facades have six window axes each. The rear facade contains the connection with the (not under protection falling) connecting volume to the circular cell building with two built-up chimneys on either side of this. In the window openings of the front facade are frames divided by a central mullion with in each half a twelve-pane sash window. In the side facades each frame contains a twelve-pane sash window. Between the daylight edges of all frames is fitted tracery. In the gable end at the front (W) is located in the middle window axis in a semicircular arched spandrel a sandstone sculpture consisting of a cartouche with the text: PENITENTIARY Ao MDCCCI and above it two climbing lions which flank the royal arms.

Valuation

The administration building dating from 1899-1901 originally serving as a cellular church is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective and typological value as a historical-functional component of the Haarlem prison complex, within which it as a visually defining component of the building at the forecourt also represents important ensemble value.
