Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The 44.25 metre high WATER TOWER situated to the east of Lippenhuizen was built in 1932 in a matter-of-fact expressionist style. The designer of this tower was the technical department of the N.V. Intercommunale Waterleiding Gebied Leeuwarden, founded in 1922. From circa 1920 onwards the water towers were designed by the designers of the I.W.G.L., in collaboration with a technical bureau; in the case of the tower at Lippenhuizen this was the technical bureau of the late H. Vriends from Breda. The most important designer who had great influence on the design of the water tower within the architectural department of the I.W.G.L. was Baron E.C. Storm van 's-Gravensande, the later director of the Water Supply Company. The tower was the last tower that the I.W.G.L. built before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Description
The water tower is built on a square ground plan. The architectural components of the water tower are: the basement, the shaft, the reservoir and the roof. The basement and the framing of the entrance section are built in dark brown brick, finished with a stretcher course and covered with tiles; the recessed entrance consists of the original double doors; the shaft is built in reddish-brown brick, the whole in Flemish bond, the mortar joints are sloped and recessed. In the basement there are concrete square openings with sluices on three sides. The shaft is accompanied by four colossal corner pilasters with a blunt angle; the reservoir casing has an equilateral octagonal form, which appears to emanate from the corner pilasters. In the shaft there are narrow vertical slits on all four sides, now blind with a ventilation pipe. The upper structure of the tower rests for the remaining corners on triple protruding concrete lintels. Below the reservoir casing a double opening, now blind with a ventilation pipe. In the protruding upper structure there are on the four corners between pilasters three horizontally arranged double openings one above the other, now blind with a ventilation pipe, separated from each other by built-in small cylinders. The upper cylinder connects to the roof edge, is the largest and is built on all eight corners of the reservoir casing. The water tower is covered by an octagonal pyramid roof finished with copper plates.
