Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Two-aisled transverse SHOP-HOUSE, of two storeys, partly of medieval origin, with facade from the mid-nineteenth century and shop front from 1910.
The building stands in the medieval town, in the building line, with its own rear access on the right.
Description
The FRONT FACADE has an essentially symmetrical layout with five window bays, with the addition of a fine shop front facing the right two bays. The simple architecture has as its richest element the entrance section with pilasters and entablature in the middle of the three remaining bays on the left. This harmonious facade from the mid-nineteenth century deliberately conceals the fact that the building behind has a centuries-old history.
The right and left window bays are situated between broad wall sections, the three central window bays are positioned closer together. The reason is that to the right of the left window bay a very thick internal wall did not allow for a facade opening; for the facade appearance this irregularity was somewhat repeated on the right to conceal this fact. However, in the aforementioned wall sections one ornamental wall anchor on the right and two on the left per storey have been inserted: the thickness of the internal wall can be clearly read from these. The aforementioned thick structural wall separates two medieval building sections: the left window bay belongs to a separate building section, which contains an upper chamber above a high-set cellar and also has a higher floor level in the attic. This cellar, with a compressed barrel vault, is 2.50 m high. A blocked opening in the vault, at the back, left of centre points to a staircase or cellar light turning to the rear. The small walls forming niches on the right are relatively modern. The floor level above the cellar is 40 cm higher than that of the rest of the building; the floor above the upper chamber differs by another 15 cm from the right section. The hearth is situated in the middle against the left side wall. The right building section is four bays wide and has a presumably old hearth in the middle against the end facade. On the left this section also contains a medieval cellar. This has a trough vault, 1.80 m high, also perpendicular to the building line. The stone cellar stairs, left-rear, begin with a few steps within the cellar. A deep niche on the right in the right wall is a remnant of the original cellar stairs. In the left wall, which has been opened to provide access to the left cellar, a 30 cm deep candle niche is present at the back. Both cellars were not built at the same time. The facade distinguishes a dwelling of three bays on the left and a shop on the right, of two bays. The shop front on the right belongs to the arrangement of this part of the building as a bakery in 1910, for H. Wall. Subsequently, a separate bakery was built in the garden for this function. Currently the entire building has a residential function, but this has not altered the character of the shop front. The original MEDIEVAL construction is clearly recognisable in the right side facade and in the roof structures on both building sections along the street. The latter, although modified by the addition of side roofs, have essentially been preserved. On the left it is a collar-tie roof - given the width a rafter couple here is not necessary - of which three collar-tie pairs still have struts. On the right the roof has four rafter couples and collar-ties with struts. The oak rafters have incised carpenters' marks, numbered from right to left. The "curved members" lack their curvature, evidently the floor was raised without raising the roof. The rafter legs are therefore shortened at the underside. The front roof slope is somewhat lifted and rests with an auxiliary structure on the old roof: evidently the front facade has been raised somewhat. This side has a low parapet, the rear side lacks this. On the right two half valley jacks have been inserted for the side roof. The simple beam layer of this right building section contains beams perpendicular to the front facade which vary in thickness from at least 19 cm to approximately 30 cm: presumably main beams are secondarily used. The joints of the floor sections are lined with thin laths against dust. This was possible because the attic had and has only very limited use for storage.
The left building section has considerably thicker structural walls than the right, an earlier building date as an independent structure forms the most obvious explanation. Its plan runs somewhat askew to the right.
For the right building section a dating in the fifteenth century is very well conceivable, the left section could then be older.
The current passage runs from the front door to a cross wall, which is part of the old rear facade of the front aisle. The niche under the herringbone arch in this is possibly an original candle niche, which has survived the centuries and then indicates that the current floor level approximates that of the Middle Ages. The hipped roof carries machine-made artificial old Dutch tiles. In the middle at the top of the front roof slope there is still a low, very narrow chimney. There are no roof dormers.
The much shallower REAR AISLE was added in the nineteenth century, whether or not at the same time as the replacement of the front facade, which gave the building its current appearance in the middle of that century. The end facades contain hearths. The hipped roof rests on a simple collar-tie roof structure with collar-ties and struts. In the FRONT FACADE the cut joint with thin mortar joints points to construction in the mid-nineteenth century. The profiled cornice conceals the relieving arches or lintels of the storey, which all show some settlement. Straight wall anchors emphasise the rhythm of the facade. On the storey the substantial window frames with moulding have renewed four-pane sash windows. The entrance to the house located centrally in the left half has a wooden frame with fluted pilasters, which carry an entablature. The ground floor has on the left a sash window without glazing bars with a frame of the same weight as that on the storey, but here provided with shutter guides. The lintel is slightly arched. To the right of the entrance there is directly against the door frame a small cellar light for the right cellar. The ground floor window on the right looks the same as the left, but it is not original, as the lintel of smoother stone betrays. The symmetrical SHOP FRONT has on either side of the entrance a plastered, white-painted parapet with the grey plinth carried over this, which the unplastered front facade possesses over its full width. Four pilasters stand on the parapet, of which the two outer ones come somewhat forward and therefore also project beyond the parapet and cornice. Both shop windows have a three-part fanlight, the intermediate lintel runs as a calf through over the entrance, above which a two-part fanlight. At the same height the pilasters are provided with a horizontal moulding. Above and below these they are provided with now red-painted fluting. The glass door is not original. Because the right section of the building, after the business function ceased, was also taken into use as residential space, this entrance no longer functions as such. Yet the character of the building has not been harmed by this change: no structural adaptations have been made to the facade. The LEFT SIDE FACADE is largely built-in, the exposed part is plastered. The rather blind, unplastered RIGHT SIDE FACADE shows much of the building's history. Various facade openings have been made and blocked over the course of time. Of three recognisable entrances, only one is now present, the few windows are also not original. The two-storey REAR FACADE is now partly built-in. The right section (viewed from the rear) contains two window bays, placed fairly close together and matching the width of the square structure in the front aisle. The left section is three window bays wide, but is partly hidden behind an extension.
Valuation The SHOP-HOUSE conceals its medieval origin behind a nineteenth-century facade.
- Of architectural historical value is the nineteenth-century facade and the early twentieth-century shop front.
- Of building historical value is the structural frame, in which the roof structure in particular plays an important role.
- Of urban planning value because of the positive role in the historic streetscape as a substantial building near the entrance to the town.
