Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MANSION built in 1871, presumably as a doctor's residence for dr. Bloemers. The building has a traditional facade composition derived from neoclassicism, while the ornaments are executed in Neo-Louis XV style. To the right of the building is the former carriage house at Koepoortstraat 38, which was built at the same time. Behind the left door of no. 38 lies the rear passage of no. 40. On the site of the mansion and carriage house stood, before 1871, three narrower buildings with plastered facades, top gables and gabled roofs perpendicular to the street direction. It is unclear whether anything of the predecessors has been preserved in the core of the current buildings. The carriage house was converted in 1925 into a garage with a flat above and does not qualify for national monument protection. In the second half of the 19th century, Doesburg became popular as a place of residence for pensioners, annuitants and retired military men, due to the lively cultural climate caused by the presence of the garrison, the cheap cost of living and the healthy air. They had mansions in neoclassicistic style built or renovated in the Koepoortstraat and surrounding area. The Koepoortstraat thereby acquired a stately and distinguished character. The new houses replaced older often narrower buildings. Parts of the older buildings such as cellars and walls were sometimes retained. The mansion is located in the continuous eastern facade wall of the Koepoortstraat. In front of the building is a stone step bordered by an ornamented iron railing. In front of the door are a few stone steps. The building has a very deep rear garden with a garden pavilion.
Description
MANSION on rectangular ground plan. The mansion contains a cellar, two storeys and an attic storey beneath a flat roof with running hipped roofs, covered with Dutch tiles. In the front roof section is a wooden dormer with a gabled roof, single-paned window with semicircular fanlight, pilasters, frieze, cornice and pediment.
The building is built in reddish-brown brick, laid in English bond. The building has a stone plinth.
The symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE has five bays and features a slightly projecting central risalit. The facade is crowned by a wooden main cornice, consisting of a corniced architrave moulding and a corniced frieze, finished with a cornice.
In the central risalit is the entrance section. The entrance section consists of a porch in a plastered frame with recessed panels and a moulded band with rounded upper corners. In the porch is a moulded window frame on stone bases and fitted with rounded upper corners and a moulded calf. The fanlight contains coloured leaded glass. The double panelled door has cast iron and copper handles and panes with cast iron grilles, in which medallions with heads are incorporated.
Above the door is a balcony on ornamented terracotta consoles, fitted with an ornamented cast iron balcony railing and a balcony door with upper and side lights in a moulded frame with rounded upper corners and a terracotta hood. The balcony door has been altered.
On either side of the central section are windows in the first and second storey in plastered, moulded frames with rounded upper corners and terracotta hoods. The window frames likewise have rounded upper corners with sash windows, fitted with moulded adjustable sills. The windows have stone sills and shutters with pull-out lower section. The balcony door is also fitted with shutters. The REAR FACADE is not visible from the public road.
The SIDE FACADES, which are largely concealed behind the adjoining buildings, are finished with a gutter on blocks.
The INTERIOR retains the original layout, consisting of a central passage from front to back, flanked by rooms en suite. Furthermore, a number of original interior elements have been preserved, such as richly ornamented and polychrome stucco ceilings, some fireplaces and a natural stone floor in the passage.
The GARDEN with pavilion is not visible from the public road.
