Inleiding
HERENHUIS, gebouwd in 1872 in eclectische stijl in opdracht van de fabrikant F. J. Mathyssen. De architect was Th. Royakkers. Het is sinds 1921 in gebruik als bankgebouw. Rond 1985 is één van de middenvensters tot entree verbouwd.
Omschrijving
Het drielaags pand van vijf vensterassen ligt in de rooilijn van de Markt. Op het afgeplatte schilddak liggen kunstleien. De gevel is gepleisterd en wit geschilderd. De vensteras aan de linkerkant en de twee dicht bijeen staande vensterassen aan de rechterzijde risaleren enigszins. Deze delen worden door lisenen geaccentueerd.
Geprofileerde waterlijsten dienen als horizontale gevelindeling.
De vensters op de begane grond hebben een gedeeld bovenlicht, terwijl de vensters erboven de oorspronkelijke vierdeling bezitten.
Links is een brede vernieuwde vleugeldeur aangebracht. Deze deur is evenals de overige muuropeningen voorzien van een geprofileerde smalle stucomlijsting met een kuif met palmetmotief. Het bovenlicht van de deur is gedecoreerd met een straalmotief van hout. Zowel het bovenlicht van de deur als de vensters op de begane grond en die van de eerste etage hebben ronde schouders. Op de begane grond is een sterk met het pand contrasterende felrode deur geplaatst. Tussen de risalieten bevindt zich een balkon met vernieuwd ijzeren spijlenhek. Openslaande balkondeuren geven toegang tot het balkon.
Op de derde etage bevinden zich ramen met dubbele rondboogindeling.
De kuif boven deze vensters is breder en hoger van vorm. Aan de zijden en links tevens in het midden worden deze vensters geflankeerd door grote geornamenteerde rozetten in hoogreliëf. Het fries van de risalieten bestaat uit reliëfs in de vorm een halve maan met aansluitende velden in de bovenhoeken. In het midden bestaat de architraaf uit twee ronde venstertjes met aansluitende velden. De gootlijst rust op liggende klosjes. Het interieur op de begane grond is geheel verbouwd.
Waardering
Het voormalige herenhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als vertegenwoordiger van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de stedelijke schaalvergroting door de bouw van rijk gedetailleerde herenhuizen voor fabrikanten. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang door de subtiel asymmetrische opbouw en detaillering van de gevel en als voorbeeld van het werk van de architect Th. Royakkers.
