Inleiding

Introduction

ROW OF GENTLEMEN'S HOUSES, built in 1850 on commission of the manufacturers Cornelis Carp and Albert Caulen. The neo-classicist block also served as a dye works with dwellings. Around 1890 a bay window was added to the left facade and the building was renovated, again in 1937. The building has an office function.

Description

The detached row of gentlemen's houses has two storeys plus a mezzanine storey and has a total of thirteen window bays. On the hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the street lie black improved Dutch roof tiles. The facade is symmetrical, the central five bays project slightly and are partly plastered, partly executed in fair-faced brickwork.

The ground floor is jointed-plastered to the sills and painted white. There is a recess for the foundation stone with text; "Corn. Carp. Ioh. Albt. Kaulen 28 junij 1850". The casement work of the six-light sash windows and that of the other windows is painted white. All sills and string courses are executed in hard stone. One door is placed in the right side facade, the other three are located in the front facade. These wide panel doors are accessed via two hard stone steps. The doors are fitted with cushioning, cast-iron grilles and push bars. The corner pilasters are jointed-plastered, the five central bays are flat plastered. The intervening parts are executed in brown handmade brick. The piano nobile is provided with eight-light sash windows. The central five two-light mezzanine windows have a continuous string course, the remaining ones individual sills. The cornice is plastered with the dentil moulding. The side facades and the rear facade are entirely jointed-plastered and painted white.

The left facade was extended at the end of the nineteenth century with a large wooden rectangular bay window with a shallow hipped roof. The corners and the opening doors are marked by ornamented cast-iron columns. Along the top of the windows is a decorative cast-iron ornament. Behind the house is a large garden.

Valuation

The gentlemen's houses are of general interest. They have cultural-historical values as an example of the socio-economic development of industrialisation in eastern North Brabant, in particular the development of an industrialisation axis on the Zuid-Willemsvaart that is also prominent at national level, they are also of importance as good examples of the typological development of the terraced dwelling, combined with industry. They have architectural-historical value as an example of the manner in which sober yet dignified neo-classicist motifs are used to increase the representation of the bourgeoisie and the manufacturers. The buildings have ensemble values as part of an industrial and transit area of national importance. They have been preserved in good condition.
