Inleiding

Introduction

The large head-neck-body FARMHOUSE stands at the edge of the village settlement to the south of the village. The farmhouse was built around the third quarter of the 19th century in a Traditional-craftsman building style and stands on the site of a former tenant farmhouse of Tjaardastate, after which the complex is named.

The driveway to the somewhat elevated farmhouse is planted on both sides with, among other things, hawthorn hedge. In front of the dwelling house linden and holly have been planted.

The farmhouse is oriented with the dwelling house (the 'head') facing north and consists of three components: the dwelling house, the connecting section (the 'neck') and the barn (the 'body'); all roughly rectangular building volumes. The head and neck lie to the east of the central axis of the barn. Enrichment through detailing of the farmhouse is mainly executed on the north and east facades which were visible; the west facade is remarkably simpler. The rear of the barn has the character of a livestock breeding enterprise. The layout of the farmhouse was partly altered around 1951; the alterations are of minor importance (windows). The attached storage barn built at that time falls outside national monument protection due to insufficient architectural value.

Description

The dwelling house of the farmhouse is built of brown bricks on a brown brick ashlar frame with subtle tectonic detailing of the north and east facades through headers, roll mouldings and mouse-tooth mouldings in a contrasting colour; the west facade is almost without articulation. The dwelling house has a basement storey, a living room on the piano nobile and an attic under the roof; a gabled roof between gable ends with chimneys and soffit boards. The roof slopes are covered with black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. On three sides of the dwelling house are cheese-cellar windows with exterior shutters and anti-theft bars in a sand-glass motif painted. The cellar windows are arched with a one-and-a-half brick course in relief and have a closing roll moulding. In the east facade two cellar windows and on the piano nobile a small window and two T-windows. The north facade is the most vividly detailed; the vertical articulation is strengthened beside the subtle colour accents by a mouse-tooth moulding and by a course in contrasting colour at the height of the ornamental wall anchors, which mark the storeys. In the north facade two cellar windows, two T-windows and in the gable top two small T-windows as attic windows. The projecting drip moulding rests on projecting corner stones. In the west facade among others two cellar windows.

The connecting section, the "neck", has on the west side a door with a fanlight and a six-pane window; both under an arched course with a projecting header course. On the gabled roof black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles and a four-pane, iron roof light. In the east facade of the connecting section from left to right: an H-window, a provisions cellar window with anti-theft bars and two arched H-windows; all arched and provided with a course with a projecting header course.

The barn is built of brown bricks on an ashlar frame; the brickwork has a decorative joint on the east facade and is flush-jointed and toothed on the west facade. On the north side a residential section with among others a door and two H-windows under an arched course with a projecting header course. The roof slopes are mainly laid with thatch and on the front and on the underside of the roof slopes six courses of roof tiles, respectively black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles and again improved Dutch tiles. The roof gutter on the east facade rests on mortared gutter blocks; on the roof ridge corners two owl boards with weathervanes in the form of an arrow. In the east facade sixteen iron stable windows with faceted glazing bars with partly original blue glass as fly-screening. In the west facade among others five iron nine-pane barn windows. The INTERIOR of the farmhouse is partly altered by changing use of the spaces. Among the valuable INTERIOR COMPONENTS are among others the tiling of the various rooms with small white tiles and in the room of the neck with linear patterns and a meander border at top and bottom. The milk cellar has trough vaults and a red-pigmented concrete floor; the interior shutters of the cellar are likewise red.

In the barn five timber frames on brick piers with in the cattle stalling wooden cow partitions. On the barn attic a mortared bacon loft in yellow Frisian bricks.

Valuation

The head-neck-body farmhouse from the third quarter of the 19th century is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- because of the high-quality aesthetic quality of the design;

- because of the special use of materials and ornamentation, in particular of the blue stable windows and the tiling in the neck;

- as a main component of a complex with commemorative value of the former possessions of the most important estate on the site, after which the complex is named;

- because of the special significance of the farmhouse at the edge of the village settlement in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the village and landscape surroundings;

- because of the reasonable to high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior;

- because of the reasonable degree of originality of interior components.
