Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele- en maatschappelijke ontwikkeling;

- als toegevoegd onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch van nationaal belang is;

- vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit van het ontwerp;

- vanwege het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek;

- vanwege de situering in de nabijheid van en de historisch nauwe relatie met (de uitbreiding van) het oude gasthuis;

- vanwege de in redelijke mate aanwezige gaafheid van zowel het exterieur als het interieur;

- in relatie tot de visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving;

- vanwege de functionele en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Introduction

The block of eight DWELLINGS -called the Streekje- is situated on the south side of the Nieuwmarkt and was built in 1907 in Transitional style, designed by architect J. Dijkstra Azn. The whole was realized on the orders of the trustees of the already existing, neoclassical Sint Anthonygasthuis from 1778, as an extension of the main building, or "First Department" (already registered under monument number 9864). The trustees purchased in 1906 the dwelling opposite the main building from Sjoerd Lycklama à Nijeholt. Subsequently they had it demolished to build eight dwellings on the vacant land. These new dwellings formed together with the Klein Gasthuis (1867) on the Laag Bolwerk the Second Department. The hospital trustees founded the new dwellings for the accommodation of "...elderly, impoverished widows, citizens and citizensesses, not belonging to the poor relief boards.". The rectangular block of dwellings lies on a narrow plot of which the access is marked by a (renewed) gate. On the front side lie narrow front gardens. The front facades are oriented to the west. In 1953 a number of windows were added to the rear facades and partition walls of clinker brick were installed in the kitchens. The dwellings were renovated in 1977: on the rear side they were provided with an extension where the sanitary facilities are housed. The interior has been altered to a minor extent. The extensions are not protected due to insufficient monumental value.

Description

The block has a rectangular floor plan; the most northern of the eight dwellings is provided with a corner risalit, which is visible from the street side. After the first three dwellings the front facade recedes slightly. In the corner risalit with spout gable is in the first and in the second storey a T-window. Above this the facade stone is installed on which the foundation year is indicated. The facade is crowned by a stepped pinnaster with a ball. The long front facade is constructed of brown brick, the rear and side facades of yellow brick. For the decorative motifs of the frieze, the facade bands between the windows, the stretches with triangular closure and the plinth yellow and red bricks are applied. The block is covered by a composite, truncated roof with black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. From north to south the openings in the front facade follow each other according to a repeating pattern: two T-windows with wooden blinds under one wide stretch, two wooden front doors with grilles -under shallow portico with natural stone doorstep- and two T-windows with shutters and separate stretch. The layout of the INTERIOR of the individual dwellings is recognizable, but altered in parts. Original are several interior components, such as the beam ceilings and some wooden doors with panels and carving in the style of Art Nouveau.

Valuation

The block of eight dwellings at Nieuwmarkt 35-45, extension of the Sint Anthonygasthuis, is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of a cultural and social development;

- as an added component of a larger whole that is of national importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective;

- because of the high-quality aesthetic quality of the design;

- because of the material use and ornamentation;

- because of the situating in the vicinity of and the historical close relationship with (the expansion of) the old hospital;

- because of the reasonable degree of preservation of both the exterior and the interior;

- in relation to the visual integrity of the urban environment;

- because of the functional and typological rarity.
