Inleiding

Introduction

The DIRECTOR'S HOUSE was built in 1917 for the director of the Craft and Mining School at Burgemeester de Hesselleplein. The house is also located at this square in the street facade diagonally opposite the school. The building was constructed in a traditionalist style with elements of Dutch Renaissance. According to the owner, the design was by architect de Beyer of the Wolfs office in Heerlen. Below the balcony on the rear side of the building a lowered ceiling with spotlights has been installed. EXCLUDED FROM PROTECTION are the balcony railing, the lowered ceiling under the balcony, the kitchen window and door, and the roof windows on the rear roof plane.

Description

The DIRECTOR'S HOUSE has an L-shaped floor plan in two storeys located under a mansard roof with red curved tiles and two chimneys. The facades are of brick in crossbond with cut mortar joints. The facades contain rectangular wooden windows and doors under fanlights with glazing bars and a course with setting and closing stones. The windows on the first storey have double glazing.

The FRONT FACADE has a plinth of kunrader stone with sandstone coping and grilles. In the front facade there are furthermore specklayer courses of which two are in sandstone and the rest in marl with wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. The front facade has on the right a slightly projecting volume with on the first storey a round-arch window, next to which is the entrance in a round-arch portico. The entrance has an original front door with panels and round window, with fanlight and two sandstone steps. On the second storey, centrally in the risalit, there is a semi-circular bay window on accolade-shaped cemented consoles with mouse-tooth decoration. The bay window has three narrow windows, on the bay window stands a wrought-iron balcony railing. Above the bay window in the facade plane stands a square wooden turret with a door with side and top lights located under a tent roof. The side and the roof are clad with slate in cross-diagonal slating. The right part of the front facade has per storey two rectangular windows, an overhanging gutter on consoles and on the roof two roof gables with pediment. On the ridge of the roof stand two chimneys.

The REAR FACADE is painted white and has on the left against the rear facade a volume of one and two storeys, both under a flat roof. The volume of one storey has kitchen windows and door from approximately 1990 and on the right on the first storey of the rear facade are situated the original garden doors without glazing bars. The fanlights are hidden behind a lowered ceiling from approximately 1990, both inside and outside. On the second storey stands a small extension with window, next to which a balcony door. On the right on the second storey are situated double balcony doors with fanlights between two narrow windows. On the rear roof plane are on the right two roof gables from approximately 1990 and on the left an original skylight, at the location of the stairwell.

The structure of the INTERIOR is reasonably intact. VALUABLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS include amongst others the authentic stairwell.

Valuation

The cultural-historical value is determined by the general significance of the director's house as an expression of a typological and socio-economic development in relation to Mining in Limburg. The building possesses architectural-historical value through the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and the distinctive use of materials including marl and ornamentation. The director's house, due to its location, is connected with the development and status of the city of Heerlen. And forms with the Mining and Craft School an essential component of the Burgemeester de Hesselleplein, which is part of the first expansion plan for Heerlen from 1913 by architect J. Stuyt and is of national importance in terms of urban planning. Furthermore, the director's house is significant due to the architectural-historical integrity of the exterior, particularly on the front side and the functional rarity.
