INLEIDING

KAPEL van het Savelbergklooster van de orde Kleine Zusters van de Heilige Jozef, is gelegen naast het voormalige woonhuis (XVIII) van J. Savelberg, de stichter van de orde. De kapel is gebouwd in 1878-1879 in Neo-Gotische stijl naar ontwerp van Joh. Kayser (sr.) en is het vroegste voorbeeld van terracottagebruik in de Limburgse kerkebouw. UITGESLOTEN VAN BESCHERMING zijn het volume loodrecht op de kapel, dat is verbouwd tot wooneenheden en de dagkapel, een volume van omstreeks 1980 van één laag tegen de linkerzijgevel van de kapel.

Omschrijving

De halfvrijstaande KAPEL heeft een L-vormige plattegrond, gelegen evenwijdig aan de straatrichting en een verzonken zadeldak met leien in kruisdekking en een dakruiter. De gevels hebben een optrek van baksteen in kruisverband met een gepleisterde plint. In de gevels bevinden zich spitsboogvormige vensters met gekleurd glas-in-lood. De VOORGEVEL heeft vijf verjongende steunberen en een doorlopende cordonlijst onder de kozijnen. De drie gotische glas-in-loodvensters bevinden zich in lijst van terracotta. Rechts ligt de entree met dubbele houten deur onder een natuursteen latei in een lijst met terracotta bovenlicht. De dubbele natuursteen zuiltjes worden bekroond door een topgeveltje (wimberg). Boven de topgevel bevindt zich een nis met beeld. Verder vier natuursteen treden. De LINKERZIJGEVEL heeft schouderstukken, een klein rond raampje en een ingemetseld zwart stenen kruis. Tegen deze gevel staat een volume gebouwd omstreeks 1980 in een bouwlaag. Klokkenstoel met klok van onbekende gieter, diam 36,5 cm.

De ACHTERGEVEL is witgeschilderd. De drie vensters hebben gedeeltelijk voorzetramen. Onder de goot bevinden zich een muizetand decoratie. Kapelgedeelte met nieuwe kozijnen in hout. Tegen de achtergevel staat de sacristie van één laag met platdak, waartegen klein volume van een laag.

Het INTERIEUR VAN DE KAPEL heeft de vorm van een zaalkerk met ranke driedelige zuilen met goudkleurig kapiteel met afbeeldingen van onder meer eikenbladeren en wijnranken. Verder rode kruisribgewelfen. Het oxaal heeft een balustrade met decoratief houtsnijwerk in gotische motieven. Onder het oxaal is rechts de entree naar de kapel en links de dichtgemaakte entree naar buiten. Het koor heeft een straalgewelf, rechts bevindt zich de toegang naar het huidige woongedeelte, waarboven een galerij met balustrade met decoratief houtsnijwerk in gotische motiefen. WAARDEVOLLE INTERIEURONDERDELEN zijn onder meer de balustrades in houtsnijwerk.

Waardering

De kapel bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarde wordt bepaald door het bijzonder belang van de kapel voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, met name in Limburg en voor het oeuvre van architect J. Kayser. Verder wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het materiaalgebruik van ondermeer terracotta en de ornamentiek. De kapel is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad Heerlen. INTRODUCTION

CHAPEL of the Savelberg convent of the order of the Little Sisters of Saint Joseph, is situated next to the former residence (XVIII) of J. Savelberg, the founder of the order. The chapel was built in 1878-1879 in Neo-Gothic style after a design by Joh. Kayser (sr.) and is the earliest example of terracotta use in Limburgian church construction. Description

The semi-detached CHAPEL has an L-shaped floor plan, situated parallel to the street direction and a sunken gabled roof with slates in cross covering and a roof turret. The facades have brickwork in cross bond with a rendered plinth. In the facades are pointed arch-shaped windows with coloured leaded glass. The FRONT FACADE has five diminishing buttresses and a continuous moulding under the frames. The three gothic leaded glass windows are situated in a frame of terracotta. On the right is the entrance with double wooden door under a natural stone lintel in a frame with terracotta fanlight. The double natural stone small columns are crowned by a small top gable (wimberg). Above the top gable is a niche with image. Furthermore four natural stone steps. The LEFT SIDE FACADE has shoulder pieces, a small round window and an inlaid black stone cross. Against this facade a volume was built around 1980 in one storey. Bell turret with bell of unknown founder, diam 36.5 cm.

The REAR FACADE is whitewashed. The three windows have partly storm windows. Under the gutter are a mice-tooth decoration. Chapel section with new frames in wood. Against the rear facade stands the sacristy of one storey with flat roof, against which small volume of one storey.

The INTERIOR OF THE CHAPEL has the form of a hall church with slender three-part columns with gilded capital with depictions of amongst others oak leaves and vine tendrils. Furthermore red cross-ribbed vaults. The gallery has a balustrade with decorative woodcarving in gothic motifs. Under the gallery is on the right the entrance to the chapel and on the left the closed entrance to the outside. The choir has a barrel vault, on the right is the access to the current residential section, above which a gallery with balustrade with decorative woodcarving in gothic motifs. VALUABLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS include the balustrades in woodcarving.

Valuation

The chapel possesses cultural-historical value as a special expression of a spiritual development. The architectural-historical value is determined by the exceptional significance of the chapel for the history of architecture, particularly in Limburg and for the oeuvre of architect J. Kayser.
