Inleiding
Vrijstaande pomp 'de Waterman' van het type DRINKWATERPOMP, vervaardigd van Belgische hardsteen in 1736 in opdracht van de gemeente Zaltbommel. Van oorsprong is de waterpomp gesitueerd in de Gasthuisstraat te Zaltbommel, waar hij tot 1901 in gebruik is geweest als drinkwaterpomp. Vanaf 1901 tot 1965 verbleef de waterpomp in het rijksmuseum te Amsterdam. Vanaf 1965 is de pomp weer in het bezit van de gemeente Zaltbommel, die in 1994 officieel eigenaar is geworden. Na herstel is de pomp omstreeks 2000 teruggeplaatst op de oorspronkelijke locatie in de Gasthuisstraat.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande, hardstenen DRINKWATERPOMP bestaande uit een holle sokkel met vierkante plattegrond, waarop een in halve lijve weergegeven figuur met dolfijn van massief hardsteen. Aan drie zijden van de hardstenen sokkel met geprofileerde plint zijn licht verdiepte velden aangebracht, waarvan de hoeken zijn versierd met schelpmotieven. In het midden van elk van deze velden bevindt zich in licht reliëf een vlakke rozet. Aan de achterzijde een kleine smeedijzeren deur, waarachter de leidingen. De figuur op de sokkel is afgebeeld als een bebaarde man met lauwerkrans om het hoofd en een draperie rondom het onderlichaam. Midden voor het lijf bevindt zich een dolfijn met opengesperde bek waarvan de staart op de rechterschouder van de man rust, achter de nek langs. De kop van de dolfijn bevindt zich onderaan, voor de buik van de man. De dolfijn dient als uitloop van het water. In de dekplaat en onder in de rug van de man een gat ten behoeve van het pompkanaal. Het geschilderde, smeedijzeren zwengelmechanisme bevindt zich tegen het achterlijf van de man. In de sokkel een leiding voor de aan- en afvoer van het drinkwater.

Freestanding pump 'de Waterman' of the type DRINKING WATER PUMP, made of Belgian hardstone in 1736 on commission of the municipality of Zaltbommel. Originally the water pump was situated in the Gasthuisstraat in Zaltbommel, where it was used as a drinking water pump until 1901. From 1901 to 1965 the water pump remained in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. From 1965 onwards the pump has been in the possession of the municipality of Zaltbommel, which officially became the owner in 1994. After restoration, the pump was replaced around 2000 at the original location in the Gasthuisstraat.
Description
Freestanding hardstone DRINKING WATER PUMP consisting of a hollow base with square ground plan, on which is depicted a figure with dolphin in half relief of solid hardstone. On three sides of the hardstone base with moulded plinth are slightly recessed fields, the corners of which are decorated with shell motifs. In the centre of each of these fields is a flat rosette in low relief. On the rear side a small wrought-iron door, behind which the pipes. The figure on the base is depicted as a bearded man with a laurel wreath around his head and drapery around the lower body. In front of the body is a dolphin with gaping mouth, its tail resting on the man's right shoulder, running behind the neck. The head of the dolphin is located below, in front of the man's belly.
