Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The GARDEN on the far side of the residential house probably originates from the 11th/13th century reclamations that took place from the IJssel. In that period, drainage ditches were dug at right angles to the river at regular intervals for the drainage of reclaimed land. Tithe roads were laid out parallel to the river. The plot of the far garden falls within the structure of these reclamations. To the east and west the plot is bounded by ditches, on the south side the boundary of the protection coincides with the former tithe road which, outside the garden plot, is planted with pollard willows. South of this path a newer part of the park has been laid out which is of subsidiary importance for protection. A few years after Adriaan Bisdom settled in Haastrecht, he had a beech tree planted in the garden in memory of the births of his sons Jacob and Theodorus in 1696 and 1698. The main structure of the formally laid out garden probably consisted at that time of straight avenues in the lengthwise direction of the plot, with the intermediate sections used for the planting of coppice. In the second half of the nineteenth century the garden received a landscape-style layout, a style appropriate to that period for a park design attached to a monumental house.
Description
Enclosed landscape-style garden with a lawn on the street side in which a heart-shaped pond has been laid out, the tail of which winds through the far garden. Further deliberate changes in level have been introduced in the front part of the far garden, including a raised flower bed with a border of volcanic stone. South of the lawn a walking wood has been planted with winding paths, in which the grave and grotto are situated. The grotto lies on an artificial mound, planted with among other things a weeping beech, a beech and a chestnut tree and surrounded by a water feature which is in connection with the pond. The garden is bounded on the south side by a straight path (east-west) after which a more recently laid out part of the park design begins.
N.B. In the 1980s a residential complex for the elderly was built in the left corner of the far garden, breaking the enclosure. This complex is a disruption of the original enclosed spatial layout of the design and the axis effect between the main house and the layout. Both this created openness and the view of the elderly residential complex are of subsidiary importance for the protection.
Valuation
The far garden is of general cultural-historical importance as a layout belonging to the property Bisdom van Vliet and laid out approximately at the same time as its construction.
The far garden is of general importance as a valuable example of a late landscape-style layout with characteristic elements such as winding paths, ponds and changes in level.
The far garden is of great urban planning and visual importance and carrier of various garden ornaments.
