Inleiding

Introduction

In 1877 built RECTORY, belonging to the already state-protected St. Barnabas Church from 1853-1854 (mon.nr. 19921), was built in the tradition of the Neo-Renaissance. The architect is unknown. W. Putman acted as building pastor. Until that time a rectory was used, which belonged to a chapel at Hoogstraat 98.

A renovation in 1939, in which among other things the built-in beds were removed, did not detract from the original main layout of the building.

Worth mentioning are among other things the stairwell with landings and skylight and in the large room the fireplace and the stucco ceiling with 'cornucopia' motif.

North of the house there is some garden layout with various types of shrubs and deciduous trees, while in front of the house, as an extension of the space in front of the church, the yard is surfaced with gravel. To the left in front of the house stands a monumental red beech. On the north side a small formal garden has been laid out, with on a small lawn a Sacred Heart statue from 1927, flanked by two garden vases, a gift from the parishioners to pastor A. Waterreus, on the occasion of his 12.5 year jubilee as pastor of the Barnabas parish.

Description

Partially cellared rectory, consisting of two storeys, has a symmetrically arranged rectangular building mass under a hipped roof with mansard roof cap, is clad with slate in Maas laying and crowned with two chimneys. The corner rafters are lined with lead. The facades, built up of grey brickwork in finely jointed English bond (snapped bond), have below a roller course a slightly projecting built-up brick ashlar frame, with the exception of the front facade. Stoop, front facade plinth, drip mouldings and drip moulding are of hard stone, while the gutter moulding is of wood. All facades are closed off by an all-around continuous main cornice with consoles at the location of the pilasters, which on the corners are extra accentuated by a topping with a small triangular pediment. Most windows are executed as sash windows with glazing bars under segmental arch-shaped relieving arches. In the front facade these are enlivened with white plastered quoins. White painted plasterwork is also applied for friezes, string courses and consoles. The entrance area has a rounded arch with plastered quoin.

The symmetrically arranged, five window-wide front facade (west) is a cornice-topped facade with pilasters on the corners and on either side of the central section, where the main entrance is located. Between the ground floor and upper storey the facade is horizontally articulated by a white plastered corniced string course.

The entrance, accessible by means of a stoop flanked by small walls of two steps and a landing, is a panelled door with a rounded arch-shaped two-light fanlight. Above it is a French balcony resting on consoles accessible via a two-light glazed double door with two-light fanlight. On the attic storey the central section is also accentuated by a dormer window with double two-light window (originally topped with a triangular pediment).

On either side of the central section are two windows, whose drip mouldings are connected to each other as a drip moulding running across the facade. On the ground floor are four-light and on the upper storey are six-light sash windows.

The five window-wide rear facade (east) has a similar symmetrical layout to the front facade, but is of a simpler design. The ground floor and upper storey are separated from each other by a corniced profiled string course. The hard stone stoop to the entrance in the middle has four steps; the original door is fitted with a facing. To its left under a lintel a basement window for a light well.

Both side facades have, as a continuation of the front and rear facades, pilasters on the corners. The left long side facade (north) has in the central axis on the ground floor a recessed window and above it, on the upper storey, an original six-light sash window under a lintel.

The right long side facade (south) has on the east side on the ground floor a four- and on the upper storey a narrow segmental arch-shaped sash window with respectively four- and three-light glazing bars. To the right of it a small rectangular outbuilding dating from the construction period under a flat roof with overhanging gutter moulding, originally intended as a strongroom. The three facades, each provided with a rectangular spandrel, have corner strips. At the far right church and rectory are connected to each other by a connecting section built extending to the rear under a flat roof. On the front side (west) a strip in the central axis, as an interruption of the gutter moulding, is crowned by a triangular pediment. To the left of it is a slightly arched door and to the right a slightly arched four-light window. The rear facade (east) has a glazed door with to its right a six-light sash window. The northern side facade is blind.

The interior has largely retained the original layout with among other things a marble-clad hall, a draught lobby, provided with etched glass with among other things 'cornucopia' motif (horn of plenty) and the text 'PAX'. The stairwell, with two flights and a landing, is lit by a skylight with coloured cathedral glass. The large rear room has a black marble fireplace and a richly decorated stucco ceiling, in which likewise the 'cornucopia' motif appears.

Valuation

The rectory of St. Barnabas Church is of general cultural-historical importance as an early example of the boom in Catholic Neo-Gothic church construction, such as came about after the restoration of the Bishops' Hierarchy in 1853.

The rectory is of general architectural-historical importance because of the Neo-Renaissance building style from the fourth quarter of the 19th century, belonging to a characteristic R.C. complex from the oeuvre of the architect W.J. van Vogelpoel, and as such representing an important movement in the development of Roman Catholic architecture in the Netherlands. The rectory is fairly well preserved in main form, material use and detailing, both externally and internally.

The rectory is visually prominent situated at Grote Haven, just outside the old village centre of Haastrecht. It possesses through its free setting and through the mutual spatial and functional coherence with the other complex components high ensemble value.
