Omschrijving

Description
Water tower, built in 1853 according to the design of H.G. Jansen and with the collaboration of D. van Gessel, N.J. Leijer and contractor L.J. Borst Verdoorn, as a lighthouse, but converted into a water tower in 1950. The construction took place at the same time as that of the present likewise protected lighthouse of Schiermonnikoog; of these twin towers the first named had the function of an inner light, the latter that of an outer light. On the occasion of the change of function in 1949-50 the lantern cupola was replaced by the present copper cupola roof, which is appropriately crowned by the figure of a Schiere monk.
Constructed from red Groninger brick and finished with a plaster layer, a now more than 29 metres high tapering lighthouse currently in use as a water tower; semicircular closed entrance section with natural stone surround and keystone, above which a commemorative plaque with the inscription (as far as legible):
During the reign of William III King of the Netherlands Prince of Orange Nassau etc; etc; etc; this light tower was built and fitted with a fixed light under the administration of the captain of the fleet I. Enslie minister of marine MDCCCLIII
The light entry into the shaft is by means of round cast-iron windows. The shaft is marked by a round-arch frieze above which an overhanging moulded edge. The lantern is sealed and is crowned by a younger copper cupola roof with a human figure (monk).
The interior still contains wrought-iron beams and cast-iron stairs.
A lighthouse from 1853, converted into a water tower in 1949, of general cultural-historical, architectural-historical and
-industrial-archaeological significance due to
-age
-design and use of materials
-place in the history of Frisian coastal lighting
-place in the history of water supply on the island of Schiermonnikoog
-the historical-functional relationship with the twin tower still in use as a lighthouse
-the presence of some wrought- and cast-iron interior components
-the striking location.
