Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een bestuurlijke ontwikkeling binnen de geschiedenis van de waterbeheersing;

- vanwege de typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid;

- vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp in vergelijking tot andere bouwwerken van dit type;

- vanwege het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek;

- vanwege de situering, verbonden met de functie van het bouwwerk;

- vanwege de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met het water;

- vanwege de in grote mate aanwezige architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur;

Introduction

The block-shaped BEACH HOUSE "De Bildtpollen" oriented towards the north is situated on the south side of the Nieuwe Bildtdijk and the Nieuwe Bildtdijkstervaart running parallel to it. The Beach House was built in 1899 in Transitional style, commissioned by the Water Board "De Bildtpollen". The beach house came as a replacement for the old "Dike House or Contribution House of the Polders". The contractor was Hotze Buwalda, carpenter at St. Jacobiparochie. The beach house was inhabited by the beach master and his family; on the attic storey, under the large roof dormer, the meeting room was housed where the Dike Board of the Water Board De Bildtpollen held meetings. In 1927, a masonry extension under a gabled roof was added against the west facade. The beach house, now a residence, is situated on a rectangular plot of reasonable dimensions with two small gardens on the south and west sides.

Description

The beach house has a rectangular ground plan and is one storey high. It is covered by a gabled roof with black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles and two chimneys. On the north side a large, rectangular roof dormer with a broken hipped roof has been placed. Under the cornice on corbels a tall frieze with moulded beadwork has been applied. According to the specification, stones and tiles from the demolition material of the old contribution house were used for the construction of the beach house; machine-made stones were used for the courses and arch fillings and Ijmuiden portland stone for the continuous facade bands. The masonry was laid in English bond. The front facade, on the north side, is symmetrically arranged and consists of a slightly projecting central pavilion, which continues into the large roof dormer. The step of stretcher bricks in portland mortar stands before a broad, wooden, double door with panels. In the centre of the semicircular, four-pane fanlight a copy has been placed of the coat of arms of the Bildt (the original hangs in the hall of the beach house). In the frieze above, the name of the building is displayed in large letters: "STRANDHUIS DER BILDTPOLLEN". In the roof dormer two windows with segmental arches and two-pane fanlights have been placed. On either side of the front door are two single-pane windows. Above the windows, at the height of the highest facade band, are inscriptions in two cartouches, respectively on the left and right sides, reading "ANNO" and "1899". In the eastern side facade are two T-windows with segmental arch and at the top two narrow windows with semicircular arch. Against the western side facade the 1927 extension has been placed. In the rear facade are three T-windows with segmental arches. All segmental arches are provided with voussoirs. The INTERIOR is no longer original. Only in the hall are there still two doors; the wooden staircase railing in Transitional style and the aforementioned municipal coat of arms are original.

Valuation

The beach house is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a distinctive expression of an administrative development within the history of water management;

- due to its typological and functional rarity;

- due to the aesthetic qualities of the design in comparison to other buildings of this type;

- due to the use of materials and ornamentation;

- due to its situation, linked to the function of the building;

- due to the historical-spatial relationship with the water;

- due to the largely present architectural integrity of the exterior;

- in relation to the visual and structural integrity of the surrounding landscape.
