Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2:
- vanwege de vrij gaaf bewaard gebleven classicistische structuur uit het midden van de 17de eeuw aangelegd op basis van een van muzikale maatverhoudingen afgeleide proportieleer;
- vanwege de 17de-eeuwse 'kijklaan' als as van symmetrie en het 17de-eeuwse grachtenstelsel en wallenstructuur;
- als representatief en als zodanig zeldzaam voorbeeld van de 17de-eeuwse Hollands-classicistische tuinstijl;

Description
Description of component 2:
HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate 't Oude Hof. The well-preserved 17th-century Dutch classicistic design of the country estate can be distinguished in two parts: a) a square section with an axis of symmetry and the never-realised house on the south side; b) a rectangular section on which the axis of symmetry, the 'viewing avenue' (Sparrenlaan) is continued towards the north.
The Sparrenlaan, planted with lime trees for the first section, runs from the forecourt via the Rondeel (intersection of Sparrenlaan - Eeuwigelaan) to the foot of the dunes. Two hundred metres east and westwards the layout is bounded by secondary axes (the Mosselenbuurt/Jan Willemlaan and the Haemstedelaan-Komlaan). These outer rings run parallel to the main axis and form the visual connection between the square and rectangular sections. Perpendicular to the outer rings, cross lanes have been realised at regular intervals (Sluislaan, Kerkelaan, Eeuwigelaan and Guurtjeslaan).
Construction of the layout began in 1643 by Anthonius van Zurck, who also had great interest in plantings. Experiments were thus conducted with Scots pine as avenue planting in the dunes. From an overview map from the beginning of the 18th century various planting patterns and planting distances are indicated (on the south side avenue trees in square formation, the Eeuwigelaan and the Viewing Avenue possessed five rows of trees in triangular formation). Remnants of avenue plantings are to be found in the terrain.
Re a.) Between the Sluislaan and the Eeuwigelaan is the square section with the house situated. On the outside (east and west) run two moats, which, via the Westdorper Beek and the Bosbeek, were fed by dune water. The planned moat on the south side was never executed, but an open connection was dug between the outer and the inner moat. On the north side at the beginning of the east moat (place name: Zwanevijver) lies a sunken round pond (the Ronde Kom). On the northwest and northeast corners of the square artificial mounds were thrown up which served as panorama points 'cat hills', these are still present today. The southern part of the square is occupied by three rectangularly moated islands with the house in the centre, on the left (east side) the vegetable garden and on the right (west side) the orchard. The islands were mutually and with the mainland connected by means of four bridges, of which the two side bridges in the middle of the 19th century by Van Reenen were replaced by earthen dams and the rear bridge was probably demolished then. The foundations of some bridge arches are still present. On either side of the access bridge and at the rondeel (Lindenlaan) are situated four cannon barrels, which probably date from the French period. On the forecourt in front of the house stand two lime trees, dating from the initial phase of the layout (1647). Behind the house (south) is a round pond situated, which is already indicated on a map of 1821. The orchard is now an open meadow edged by low rows of trees. In the orchard stands a greenhouse (see component 6) and a low brick barn (now garage), which originally stood in the wood, but after WWII was moved to its present location. The symmetrical 17th-century layout of the square section, whereby the moating mirrored itself in the walking paths, is disturbed by the creation of two diagonal axes running from the forecourt. The eastern diagonal was laid out before the middle of the 19th century and now functions as a driveway (the Roodeweg), the western (the Oude Roodeweg) axis is of later date. East of the Roodeweg are the remnants of an ice cellar recognizable by an earthen elevation (at a height of approximately 1 metre and with a circumference of approximately 6 to 7 metres).
Re b) The original straight axis of symmetry (Sparrenlaan) now has a slightly curved course which was part of the simple landscaping in the nineteenth century. Characteristic of the layout are the earthen banks, which border the Eeuwige- and the Sparrenlaan and which occur along all main lanes, with the exception of the Sluislaan. The originally unplanted banks are, although now planted and crossed by paths, still clearly present. At the intersection of the main lanes (the Rondeel) the earthen banks form a rosette-shaped space, which is now overgrown by vegetation. The rectangular section had a layout of four identical sections, probably hunting grounds, which were later planted as woodland. In the nineteenth century some winding paths were laid out through the coppice. Although the straight lanes on the west side of the Sparrenlaan are still recognizable, the avenue planting has disappeared. On the east side of the Sparrenlaan a villa park was realised in the 1930s/40s of this century. In this section the lanes are asphalted. The structure of the straight lanes with the still partly existing characteristic banks (Komlaan, Kerkelaan and Guurtjeslaan), insofar as they fall within this original 'rectangular' section, form part of the protected park layout. The Eeuwigelaan and the Komlaan nowadays form a busy traffic route. North of the Eeuwigelaan and situated more or less parallel to it lies an old tram track of the steam tram which ran between Bergen and Bergen aan Zee between 1909 and 1955.
Valuation
HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate 't Oude Hof of general importance:
- because of the relatively well-preserved classicistic structure laid out in the middle of the 17th century on the basis of a proportional theory derived from musical ratios;
- because of the 17th-century 'viewing avenue' as axis of symmetry and the 17th-century moat system and bank structure;
- as a representative and as such rare example of the 17th-century Dutch classicistic garden style;
- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
