Omschrijving onderdeel 2

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- als representatief voorbeeld van een deels in structuur en deels in detail gaaf bewaard gebleven tuin- en parkaanleg in landschapsstijl dat vanaf de eerste aanzet aan het eind van de 18de eeuw door de tuinarchitect J.D. Zocher jr. in de 19de eeuw is vervolmaakt;

- als voorbeeld van een van de weinige buitenplaatsen in Gelderland met een familiebegraafplaats gelegen op een eilandje;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid van ontwerptekeningen van de architect/ontwerper T.J. Ubbing uit 1823 en 1825 en een ontwerptekening van de definitieve situatie van de tuinarchitect J.D. Zocher jr.;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid van exotische bomen daterend uit de tijd van de aanleg in landschapsstijl;

Description of component 2

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. A well-preserved park layout in landscape style, intact in structure and partly in detail, to which a first beginning was given at the end of the 18th century with a winding copse, the so-called 'Schipbosch'. Around 1823 the architect J.T. Ubbing landscaped parts of the layout, of which the meandering watercourse and the winding path running parallel to it, which connects the house to the 'Schipbos' to the south-west of the house, remain. The Schipbos consists of a small wooded area with extensive yew planting and winding paths. This copse owes its name to a rise which is now almost entirely flattened (caption on Ubbing drawing 1823 'a heightening which forms like a ship in the water'). On the south-west and south-east sides the estate is bounded by a path with partly double avenue planting. This layout is already shown on a second map by Ubbing (1825). During the 19th century the layout was altered by landscape architect J.D. Zocher jr. in late landscape style, as it still exists today (the design drawing has been preserved). In the executed design the rectilinear agricultural lands were created as ovals and elliptical shapes and incorporated into the parkland. The garden and park layout can be distinguished into a park section in the immediate vicinity of the house located within the encircling ditch, with the park wood to the south and fields, meadows and productive woodlands to the west. These latter two parts are separated from each other by means of a drive, which with a gentle slope leads to the house, which is oriented at right angles to the drive. From the drive there are open views in a northerly and westerly direction over the meadows with border planting and tree groups (much new planting), whilst the south and east side of the drive offer a relatively enclosed view of the park wood. Close to the house, in front of the now demolished coach house with stables and gardener's residence, lies a simple rectilinear layout around a rectangular fish pond as a remnant of a formal layout. The kitchen garden was also originally located here with a garden wall and greenhouse (no longer present). The house is situated on an island, the ditch around which is dug in a winding form. The grounds are laid out with old and exotic trees such as Chinese wingnut, swamp cypress and to the left of the house a plane tree (approx. 300 years old). From the access bridge the view of the front elevation of the house is concentrated, which is achieved by the coulisse effect of the dense border planting. A dovecot stands concealed among the bossages to the left behind, which forms a striking element in the circumambulating walk around the outside of the estate. Behind the house lies a lawn with a few specimen trees and centrally a large tree group. On old photographs it can be seen that round flower beds lay on the lawn. This part has an open character through the sight axes that are retained in a north-easterly and south-easterly direction. Beside the house stands a summerhouse (in 1999 in a state of disrepair) from which one has a fine view of the layout. Along the winding ditch lay a boathouse. From the eastern point of the island runs the aforementioned winding path to the Schipbos, which is flanked on the west side by an elongated meadow that narrows and widens. The burial island in the south-west corner of the layout originally formed the centre point of a lobe-shaped path system, but through the disappearance of paths the island has become more isolated.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the estate Landfort is of general importance:

- by reason of its age;

- as a representative example of a garden and park layout in landscape style that is intact in structure and partly in detail and which has been perfected from its first beginning at the end of the 18th century by landscape architect J.D. Zocher jr. in the 19th century;

- as an example of one of the few estates in Gelderland with a family burial ground located on a small island;

- by reason of the presence of design drawings by architect/designer T.J. Ubbing from 1823 and 1825 and a design drawing of the definitive situation by landscape architect J.D. Zocher jr.;

- by reason of the presence of exotic trees dating from the time of the landscape style layout;

- by reason of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the estate.
