Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

Description
Description component 2:
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate De Treek. Layout in landscape style, partly intact in structure and partly in detail, with the main building on the east side of the Treekerweg and the early 19th-century landscape park provided with a winding pond feature and sight lines over the grasslands, and on the west side the formal 18th-century avenue system with woodland sections partly featuring winding paths. The layout in landscape style was created in the nineteenth century on the instruction of Willen Hendrik de Beaufort, while retaining the 18th-century structure (see cadastral map of 1832 and c.1900). The design is attributed to landscape architects J.D. Zocher jr. and S.A. van Lunteren and has undergone virtually no changes except for the reorganisation by L.A. Springer in 1910. The layout is characterised by curved lines, meadows with solitary trees and groups of trees, and various sight lines. The formal avenue structure, as drawn on a map of the country estate Den Treek from c.1750, currently consists among others of the Treekerweg, the Houtlaan and the Akkerse Steeg. In the road pattern the through route has been diverted from the Houtlaan planted with oaks to the north-south running Treekerweg. The Houtlaan still functions as a formal sight avenue. The Treekerweg and the Heetvelderweg continuing its line are planted with single beeches and provided with a ditch; at the Driesprong the Treekerweg is planted with double and single beeches. The wooded section west of the main building contains remains of a layout with winding paths and a roundabout. The avenues around the house have a brick surface. The main building stands transversely across the Treekerweg with an open landscape-style layout at its front, which is bounded and framed by a 'green wall' of woods. An opening in this 'wall' is formed by a diagonal sight avenue (Houtlaan). In front of the house is a semicircular lawn with a monumental solitary beech (18th century) and directly in front of the house an old linden. On the lawn are nineteenth-century groups of beeches and oaks. A remnant of an oak avenue (old through road towards Leusden) separates the lawn from the rectangular meadow (wooded meadow) on the north side. From the access road runs a sight line over the wooded meadow towards the main building and the pond feature behind the house Den Treek. On the cadastral map of 1832 it can be seen that the wooded meadow was still largely built upon; this built-up area was demolished and relocated to the sides, so that a large open meadow could be created (see cadastral map c.1900). Behind the house lies a broad lawn from which views open onto a winding pond feature and the meadow beyond (the views have now become overgrown). On the lawn are solitary oaks and red beeches, by the house stands an oak from 1753. The pond forms the core of the layout and is bounded on the northeast side by the so-called Kombos and on the southwest side by a park wood with relief. In the Kombos lies a enclosed second pond feature, also with an islet. The ponds are connected by a serpentine watercourse which encloses a meadow on which a dovecote was built around 1880. The park wood is traversed by a remnant of an avenue with beeches (in line with the Heetvelderweg) and has a viewpoint from a hilltop planted with beeches over the pond. In the park wood lies an ice house. Various circular walks provide constantly changing experiences of the landscape layout. A large part of the nineteenth-century path pattern, as indicated on the cadastral map of 1832, is still present. On this map is also shown a walking path from the Kombos in an easterly direction through the meadows, which has disappeared. There are three important sight axes in the layout: firstly from the terrace in front of the house over the islet and meadow towards the dovecote (as an image of the ideal country life); secondly from the bridge situated to the southeast along the island and between on the one hand the main building with rhododendrons and old oaks and on the other hand the service dwelling with a group of red beeches, towards the carriage house; and thirdly from the bridge situated to the northeast towards the main building.
Valuation:
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate of general importance: - for its age; - for the well-preserved 18th-century formal avenue system; - as an example of a well-preserved 19th-century landscape park with a very fine and characteristic winding pond feature and various sight lines, which provide a surprising visual experience of the park; - for the presence of monumental solitary trees and groups of trees from the time of the layout; - for the visual coherence between the different complex components of the country estate.
