Inleiding

Introduction

VILLA 'Houtheuvel', built in 1879 to the design of architect H.P. van den Aardweg for timber merchant Jan Brandjes. A part of the rear building is probably of older, possibly early 19th-century origin. The plot is situated between the Purmersteenweg to the south, traditionally the eastern exit road of Purmerend, and the watercourse de Where to the north. The villa stands on a slight (artificial) elevation; on the strip of land to the east of the villa, the timber business of the Brandjes family was established until 1927.

Description

Villa Houtheuvel consists of a main building and behind it two smaller masses, interconnected and all three under their own roof. The main building consists of the actual residential part and is constructed on a rectangular floor plan over two storeys and hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the Purmersteenweg. The brick facades are rendered white; the front facade is provided with coarse rustication divisions and string courses, the eastern side facade with narrower rustication bands.

The symmetrical front facade (south) of five bays has a centrally placed entrance with stone steps and a balcony on the upper storey with decorated moulding. The upper storey windows have stucco decoration at the top. In a narrow mezzanine, four low windows have been placed in the window bays and consoles for the wooden gutter, which runs around the building section. The side facades (west and east) were executed soberly, are provided with windows and have ornamental wall anchors for the upper storey and attic. The hipped roof is covered with dark-glazed Dutch antique tiles and has brick chimneys at the ridge corners.

The rear building to the northwest had a secondary function and is connected to the house by a lower addition. It is constructed on a rectangular floor plan over two storeys under a gently sloping gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the main ridge and is covered with dark-glazed Dutch antique tiles. The rendered facades show rose anchors; the one on the west is blind.

The rear building to the northeast is also connected to the house through an intermediate section of two storeys. It is a part of the house that in appearance has been made equal to the other parts, but in core is older, as indicated by the early 19th-century wall anchors. The storey height and finish also differ from the front house. This section on a rectangular floor plan is constructed over two storeys under a hipped roof perpendicular to the main roof. The roof has black Dutch antique tiles.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance from an architectural and cultural-historical perspective due to its well-preserved main form and facade arrangement and as a characteristic spacious villa from the second half of the 19th century. The villa is further important as an example from the history of residential living.
