Omschrijving
Inleiding
VILLA 'Clementine', gebouwd in 1880 in eclectische trant door de plaatselijk bekende architect J.V. Lankelma.

Description
Introduction
VILLA 'Clementine', built in 1880 in eclectic style by the locally renowned architect J.V. Lankelma. The villa was intended for timber merchant Nicolaas S.A. Brandjes and was named after his wife Clementine van Rijn. After occupation, the building, as municipal property, received office purposes, including that as temporary town hall (1910), district court (1913) and office for the receiver of Registration and Crown Lands, and for the Ministry of Agriculture, which has been its tenant to this day. The villa stood at the edge of the town at the time of its construction.
Description
Villa Clementine was built on a rectangular floor plan and was constructed in red handmade brick in cross bond (with narrow bed joint) on a pile foundation over two storeys and roof. The facades have identical detailing with a stone plinth and window ledge, rendered bands, small pediments on lathing in line with the facade and a hanging wooden cornice with fretworked lambrequin motifs. Nevertheless, the facades each have their own character.
The front facade (east) consists of a recessed entrance between a heavily articulated moulding with brick bands and situated under a balcony. On either side a double window section with sash windows on ground and upper storey.
The left side facade (south) of three window bays with sash windows contains the foundation stone in the recessed middle part of the base.
The right side facade (north) of five bays contains doors on the ground and upper storey, which originally opened onto a veranda and balcony running the full width. (This front-placed wooden construction on piles with fretworked railings has been removed.) The rear facade (west) is constructed over the middle section over the two storeys; on either side there are low additions under a catslide roof.
The villa has a gently sloping, angled tent roof, now with non-original covering. The original chimneys and decorative tops are no longer present.
Of the interior, the arrangement was largely preserved. To be mentioned are the well-preserved stucco of ceiling and overdoor ornaments in the hall on the ground and upper storey. Furthermore the spiral staircase over a half-oval with balustrade. A secondary staircase back-to-back with the main staircase is hidden behind a wall, but possibly (partly) still present.
Valuation
The villa is of general importance from an architectural and cultural-historical perspective as a largely well-preserved town villa from the last quarter of the 19th century in its main form and detailing, and as an example from the history of residential living.
