Omschrijving

Description

The POLDER HOUSE located behind the Lekdijk is erected on a nearly rectangular ground plan and consists mainly of two storeys under a composite roof truss structure. The roof covering consists of smoked tuile du Nord tiles. The windows are provided with round, basket and segmental arch-shaped relieving arches with sandstone springer and keystone. The windows in the first storey are provided with red-and-white painted shutters in a green surround. The asymmetrical front facade is divided into three sections. The slightly projecting left building section consists of a stepped gable with two storeys under a gabled roof with the ridge direction perpendicular to the road. The facade has a stepped gable termination with a shield-bearing lion provided with the coat of arms of the province of Utrecht as a crowning element. The facade contains two cross windows in the first storey. The second storey contains three coupled windows with fanlights, separated by wall piers. Below this, the inscription 'Vivo leo cespite tutus' is carved in hardstone, with the dates '1675' and '1903' on either side. The gable top has a bell-shaped spandrel with a cross window beneath a round arch. The top gable is further enlivened with ornamental wall anchors. The middle building section is a side facade two storeys high and two window bays wide. On the left, on the ground floor, there is a projecting round arch-shaped portico. Within this is the main entrance, consisting of a wooden door with sidelights with a round arch-shaped fanlight. To the right of this, the side facade contains a cross window. Above the portico is a hardstone balustrade with spherical corner crownings. The facade has French doors with fanlights and on the right a cross window. The rightmost building section is a side facade of two window bays, each with a cross window; on the front only one storey high. The roof plane is interrupted by two roof dormers under hipped rooflets. The left side facade contains a door and a number of cross windows. In the right side facade there are two cross windows placed one above the other. Against the rear facade, perpendicular to the main volume, a building section of one storey under a gabled roof is placed. Against this building section, on the northwestern side, is placed a stone barn under a gabled roof.

In the interior of the office, the original layout has been almost entirely retained. The ground floor contains as main rooms the hall and the stairwell. On the right, in the hall, a hat-rack in neo-Renaissance style with coats of arms has been placed. The main rooms are situated on the first floor. The stairwell has a wooden ceiling with skylight. The large meeting hall is situated in the left building section. This hall is executed with wooden wall panelling, in which a number of cupboards are incorporated. On the southwestern side there is a fireplace arrangement with green Tudor relief tiles and a wooden fireplace mantle with neo-Renaissance ornamentation. In the middle window is a stained-glass window with the coat of arms of the province of Utrecht. The corbels supporting the beams are fixed with rosettes and rest on natural stone brackets. The furniture, such as the meeting table and chairs, dates from the time of construction. The room of the dike-reeve next to the meeting hall is executed in the same style.

Valuation

The building is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural-historical value as a characteristic example of a polder house in Dutch neo-Renaissance style from around 1900. It is intact with regard to the main form, the use of materials and the detailing of the exterior and partly also the interior. The polder house is furthermore of importance as an expression of the administrative history of the Hoogheemraadschap van de Lekdijk Benedendams en IJsseldam. It also has ensemble value due to its image-determining location on the Lekdijk.
