Inleiding

Introduction

Riveted steel LIFTING BRIDGE from 1935-1936 over the Gouwe, built by N.V. De Vries Robbé & Co. from Gorinchem for the purpose of widening and canalization of the Gouwe as part of the improvement of the waterway from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. Identical bridges are located in Waddinxveen and, with differences in a larger bridge width and navigation height, over the Gouwsluis in Alphen aan den Rijn.

Description

The lifting bridge is constructed from two conically tapering lift towers, consisting of open riveted lattice-work structures, between which the deck is guided during opening and closing of the bridge. The deck consists of a roadway construction and two riveted lattice-work main girders with a top lateral bracing between them. The deck is balanced by concrete ballast blocks in the lift towers; the deck is connected by means of steel cables via cable pulleys at the top of the lift towers to the ballast blocks. The navigation width is 25 metres, the width between the railings 9 metres. The navigation height in closed condition is 2.5 metres and in open condition 35 metres. On the bridge steel railings with decorative circles and in wrought iron the name and construction year of the bridge: "Boschkoopse Brug, Anno Domini 1936". The concrete abutments are clad with yellow brick, provided with concrete coping plates and corner stones. Concrete polygonal bridge-keeper's cottage with copper-clad roof on the south side against the eastern bank. On both sides of the elongated approach structures small walls of yellow brick with gravel concrete coping plates and pylons and steel railing bars. Concrete stairs with identically laid parapets and/or steel railings from street level to the bridge. On the east side in the approach structure two viaducts: one two-lane underpass for motor traffic, one bicycle tunnel. Both with concrete side walls and ceilings. Further several storage spaces behind wooden doors in the approach structure. On the western bank a viaduct with walls of glazed brick and a very shallow concrete Tudor vault. Between the viaduct and the Gouwe a transformer room with storage behind heavy steel doors.

Valuation

The lifting bridge is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a representative example of a steel lifting bridge from the mid-1930s and as an expression of infrastructural development surrounding the widening and canalization of the Gouwe. The bridges in Boskoop, Alphen aan den Rijn and Waddinxveen form a unique ensemble in the Netherlands with high townscape value due to the visually defining situation and silhouette effect in the landscape. The lifting bridge is in a high degree of integrity. The lifting bridge has meanwhile acquired a high rarity value, as one of the few well-preserved lifting bridges and in connection with the identical lifting bridges in Alphen aan den Rijn and Waddinxveen.
