Inleiding

Introduction

The former POST OFFICE with integrated official residence in IJsselstein was built in 1902 to the design of C.H. Peters (1847-1932) in a combination of neostyles with elements of Chalet style and neorenaissance characteristic of him. As state architect he designed a large number of post and telegraph offices in this recognisable building style with considerable care in finishing and detailing. The office section was located on the ground floor in the right part of the building. Behind the left three window bays the official residence was located across both storeys. Also the storey above the office section on the right, consisting of five (bed)rooms, belonged to the official residence. The building is an image-defining element in the virtually contiguous development along the Utrechtsestraat.

N.B. The office section on the ground floor has been modernised and falls outside protection. This also applies to the extension beneath the flat roof on the right at the rear, which is of later date.

Description

The freely standing building with its ridge direction parallel to the building line of the Utrechtsestraat is built on a T-shaped floor plan and consists of two storeys beneath a combined and overhanging gabled roof covered with dampened cross tiles. The roof slopes are finished at the short sides with decorated wind braces and are supported by carved struts. On the front and rear sides there are two small roof dormers beneath a curved pitched roof, on which originally a weathervane was mounted. Three rendered chimneys stand on the ridge. The facades are constructed of grey brick and enriched with natural stone bands. The windows have sash frames and fanlights with three arched lights. At the top they are spanned with arched relieving arches, in which natural stone setting and closing stones are incorporated. The front facade (south-east) is a long facade nine window bays wide. On the second bay from the left is the entrance to the official residence, consisting of a panelled door with fanlight. At the far right is the panelled door with fanlight leading to the office. In the middle bay a Flemish gable is constructed beneath a pitched roof, which is supported on the front by struts. The rear facade is characterised by a building volume perpendicular to the main volume, beneath a pitched roof with lower ridge and gutter. This building volume has three windows on the ground floor, two windows in the second storey and one window in the gable. Against the right side facade is a single-storey building volume with a flat roof. Against the left side facade is a basement extension beneath a lean-to roof. The stairwell and kitchen are housed in it. The latter falls outside protection.

The interior is partly in original condition. In the former director's residence (the left part of the building) the original floor plan layout has been largely maintained and contains a number of elements from the construction period of the post office, including a coffered ceiling and a black marble chimney piece in the room to the left of the corridor. The corridor has a black and white marble floor and barrel vaults. The staircase has neogothic-style treated stringers, a staircase newel and balustrade with trefoil motif. On the upper floor the large room at the front has a coffered ceiling, two marble chimney pieces, panelled wainscoting beneath the windows and panelled sliding doors with floral-decorated metalwork. On the attic storey is the former servants' room.

Valuation

The post office with integrated official residence is of general significance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a good example of a post office from the beginning of the 20th century by state architect C.H. Peters in a style recognisable as his own, consisting of a combination of neostyles with elements of Chalet style and neorenaissance, both as regards the exterior and partly as regards the interior. As such the building is also of importance for the oeuvre of architect C.H. Peters. It also has ensemble value as a striking building in the street scene.
