Onderdeel 4
KOETSHUIS

Description
Component 4
COACH HOUSE
The 18th-century COACH HOUSE or stable building, on partly 17th-century foundations, has a rectangular ground plan and was originally fitted with a mansard roof covered with blue old Dutch tiles. Alterations from 1854, 1890, 1946 and a fire gave the coach house its present appearance. The layout of the southeast and long facade (facing the courtyard) is from left to right; a double-winged door and three windows, the first two are two panes high and two panes wide, the third is two high and three panes wide. The lower windows are casement windows, the upper ones are sash windows. The end facade, northeast, contains on the left a window and in the middle above near the gutter a hayloft opening in the roof apron. The long northwest facade contains a window, a door with fanlight and steps, two windows, a double-winged door (positioned directly opposite the other door) and higher an empire-style window that is two panes wide. The aforementioned windows of both northeast and northwest are two panes high and two panes wide, above sash windows and below casement windows. The southwest facade contains regularly spaced 8-pane empire-style sash windows, here too in the middle above near the gutter is a hayloft opening. The facades are white plastered (originally ochre) with a grey plinth and have near the gutter a frieze in stucco. Originally a number of roof dormers were present in the roof truss structure. After the fire, in connection with repairs, original components of the construction were stored and documented. Of the INTERIOR the coach stabling is reasonably intact, other rooms have lost their original layout through change of function. These rooms, except for the coach stabling, fall outside protection due to insufficient monumental value.
Valuation COACH HOUSE belonging to the historic country estate Sterkenburg, of general importance: - because of its age; - because of the characteristic architectural design; - as a characteristic and important functional component of the country estate; - for legally historical reasons; - because of the characteristic situation of major significance within the historic garden and park layout; - because of the functional spatial positioning and relationship with other components of the country estate; - as the only remaining work of stonemason-master builder Jan Verkerk and the building activities between 1754-1767.
