Omschrijving complexonderdeel 2

Description of complex component 2

The PARK LAYOUT of the country estate Rusthoek dates in principle from the period of 1771. In that year a grand canal was constructed behind the house, which consisted of a long arm extending from the house to the north and a transverse arm in an east-west direction. In the nineteenth century this formal layout was reworked and reconstructed as a pond complex in landscape style. The pond runs behind the house in a straight line in a northern direction and branches into two narrow arms which come together again behind an artificially raised mound. The mound lies in the sight line of the house and the old grand canal. Over the narrow arms lie two bridges: a recent wooden bridge and a brick arch bridge from the beginning of the twentieth century. The most northerly part of the terrain is laid out as woodland park. A winding path runs through it. The higher rear part of the woodland park is the remnant of a dike that protected the country estate against flooding from the river Eem.

Following construction of the new Rusthoek in 1905, a parterre garden was created in front of the house, on the southern side, according to plans by landscape architect L.A. Springer. This layout has been lost. A grass area now lies in front of the house. South of the J.F. Kennedylaan, which runs through the country estate in an east-west direction in front of the house, lies a meadow. On the eastern side lies a remnant of the access drive, which is planted with beech trees. The lane is called Rusthoeklaan and is partly public road. Rusthoeklaan 102 is the former porter's lodge, which falls outside the protection. The meadow is bordered by a wrought-iron fence with an opening gate at the former access drive. This gate is furnished with cast-iron posts.

Valuation of complex component 2.

The park layout is of architectural-historical value because of the formal eighteenth-century layout transformed into a landscape park as well as of ensemble value because of the relationship of the country estate Rusthoek with Benthuys by means of the open meadow area in front of the house.
