Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

CORN MILL 'De Vriendschap' is a smock mill dating from 1872, located on a higher part of the municipality of Veenendaal along the Nieuwe Weg. The location and placement of the mill on a smock work towards optimal wind exposure. Due to the low-rise development of the surroundings and the absence of tall trees, the biotope can be considered good. From the layout of the storeys and the working of the beams used, it can be deduced that this is a reused superstructure, which presumably served earlier around Amsterdam as a corn and pea mill. 'De Vriendschap' was in use until 1952, after which the internal machinery was removed in 1957 and in 1967 the sails and smock disappeared. In that year the mill was converted into a grain silo. The shaft was relocated to mill 'De Toekomst' in Hoeven. In 1995 'De Vriendschap' was restored to its original state and now serves as a cattle feed mill.

Description

The corn mill located on the Nieuweweg is of the octagonal smock mill type, with reed thatch on a square stone base. The square base is constructed of brick and has a plastered plinth and a plastered right side gable. The base consists of two storeys and contains opening doors on the front and six-paned sash windows. In the left side gable two steel round-arched windows are placed. In the second storey four-paned sash windows are located in the front and side gables. On the south-east side a storage shed of two storeys under a flat roof has been built against the mill, which is of subordinate importance for the protection. Above the second storey of the base the smock has been applied. Above this is the reed-thatched octagonal wind pump. The sail cross is Old Dutch fenced and equipped with busseling noses with brake flaps.

The interior consists above the ground floor, which serves as storage space, of a number of storeys each containing a separate component of the working machinery. The first storey, in the stone part of the mill, is the milling floor. Here the lightwork is fitted to determine the fineness of the flour. The second storey, the smock storey, is used as the stone storey. Here stand two pairs of millstones. On the main shaft are connected the hoisting gear and a jacob's ladder. In the roof truss storey lies a cast-iron shaft manufactured in 1995, made by iron foundry Hardinxveld. The upper wheel has a diameter of 2.85 metres.

Valuation

The corn mill is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an example of a reed-thatched smock mill with stone base from the third quarter of the 19th century. Furthermore, the mill has cultural-historical value because of its original function, as well as ensemble value because of its image-determining location on a higher part of Veenendaal.
