Omschrijving

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de rijke en harmonieuze verweving van in de aanleg herkenbare geschiedenislagen in formele en landschappelijke trant en in de vorm van historische ontginningsarchitectuur van de 16de tot de 20ste eeuw;

- als gaaf bewaard en relatief zeldzaam voorbeeld van een 'ornamental farm' uit omstreeks 1800;

- vanwege de uitgestrektheid van deze 'ornamental farm'.

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic garden and park layout of Baest is characterised by an interweaving of diverse types of agricultural and forestry parcels with park elements in formal and landscape style. In essence, this interweaving of the useful with the pleasant has been a characteristic of Baest since ancient times. In the papal bull of 1560 it was determined that Baest, which had been in the possession of the Abbey of Tongerlo since the 13th century, would serve for the personal maintenance of the bishop of the new diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch. Since then Baest probably served as an outlying farm and country seat of this church dignitary. The oldest elements of the layout of Baest, which date from the 16th century and possibly from an even earlier date, are the centrally situated house plot, the access drive (Van de Mortellaan) running in an ample irregular curve that crosses the layout over its entire width, the still clearly recognisable extensive ramparts on the NW side and SW side of the layout, which to this day partly mark the boundary of the layout, and the stream system the Beerse, Grote Beerse and Kleine Beerse, which in three strongly meandering branches runs through the entire layout lengthwise. From the 17th and 18th and partly from the 19th century dates the formal lane pattern, which in straight lines, square and rectangular figures and in the form of an ornamental goose-foot forms the framework of and connecting element between the agricultural and forestry parcels. An important lane is the 1000-metre long access drive (Torendreef; provided with a double avenue planting with beech) at the rear of the house, which is also a sight line towards the church of Oirschot (at present the sight is partly broken by a recently built pig farm just east of the Groenewoudse Dijk). Around 1800 and in the 19th century a path pattern with surrounding park woodland in landscape style was laid out on Baest in the north, west and south sides of the layout, in particular on both sides of the meandering stream. It is remarkable that at this change large parts of Baest retained their formal character. As such, the layout of Baest is comparable to the parks of the Brabantine country estates Hondsdonk and Valkenberg (Ulvenhout) which were similarly altered around the same time, where likewise agricultural and forestry lands formed the most important scenes and scenery for a walk via winding paths and formal drives. Such 18th- and early 19th-century laid out 'ornamental farms', of which only few are preserved in the Netherlands, took shape especially in Gelderland. With the aforementioned country estates in Ulvenhout, Baest is in the province of Brabant a rich and relatively well-preserved example of this type of Dutch cultural landscape. An important source of this layout, which still exists in almost its entirety, is the map of Baest from 1818 (coll. Huis Baest). In 1854 the moat surrounding the house was filled in and the moat at the rear was dug out to the current pond feature in landscape style. Around 1970 various component gardens in formal style were laid out directly to the south and north. Given their recent date of laying out these component gardens are of secondary significance for the designation.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of Baest is of general cultural-historical importance

- owing to the age;

- owing to the rich and harmonious interweaving of historical layers recognisable in the layout in formal and landscape style and in the form of historic reclamation architecture from the 16th to the 20th century;

- as a well-preserved and relatively rare example of an 'ornamental farm' from around 1800;

- owing to the extent of this 'ornamental farm'.
