Inleiding
BOORTOREN voor het omhoog pompen van water uit de zoutlagen, die de Koninklijke Nederlandse Zoutindustrie na het verkrijgen van de boorconcessie in 1933 in het zoutwinningsgebied bij Hengelo plaatste. Inmiddels zijn de meeste boortorens vervangen door lage pompgebouwtjes. De toren is identiek aan de torens Mensinkweg (nr. 44) en Boekeloseweg (nr. 27). De ligging van de torens nrs, 27, 16 en 44 op het terrein van de zoutfabriek legt een directe relatie met de verwerking van het zout.
Omschrijving
Geteerde houten toren (nr. 16), die zich naar boven verjongt onder een getoogd dakje. De toren is samengesteld uit een houten gebintwerk, geplaatst op betonnen poeren en bekleed met staande houten delen. De vloer is met oorspronkelijke klinkers bestraat. In de toren rechtgesloten houten vensters met roedenverdeling.
Waardering
De zouttoren is van cultuur-, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig belang vanwege:
- de betekenis van de zoutwinning voor de sociaal-economische geschiedenis van Hengelo en omgeving

Introduction
BORING TOWER for pumping water up from the salt layers, which the Royal Dutch Salt Industry placed in the salt mining area near Hengelo after obtaining the boring concession in 1933. Meanwhile, most of the boring towers have been replaced by low pump buildings. The tower is identical to the towers at Mensinkweg (no. 44) and Boekeloseweg (no. 27). Description
Tarred wooden tower (no. 16), which tapers upward under a curved small roof. The tower is assembled from a wooden timber frame, placed on concrete footings and clad with standing wooden elements. The floor is paved with original clinker bricks. In the tower closed wooden windows with glazing bars.
