Omschrijving

HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG onderdeel 2.

Waardering

De HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege de deels in structuur en deels in detail gaaf bewaarde aanleg in landschapsstijl uit het begin van de 19de eeuw;

- vanwege de zeldzaamheidswaarde van een formeel lanenstelsel uit de 18de eeuw met elementen uit de 18de-eeuwse Nederlandse tuinarchitectuur;

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT component 2. The country estate is characterised on the one hand by the well-preserved eighteenth-century formal avenue system and on the other by the landscape-style layout, which came about in two phases: around 1820 the first phase takes place and after 1842 the second phase. J.D. Zocher jr. probably concerned himself with the latter-mentioned phase. The formal structure of the layout is determined by the Visserssteeg, the entrance avenue, the partly still with original cobblestones paved Melkweggetje (1777) as the transverse axis of the entrance avenue, part of the avenue in the axis of the house (rear side) and the two star forests with roundabouts. The centre of the first, most southerly situated star forest is formed by a hillock 'konijnenberg', on which a linden tree has been planted (c. 1835). From this point runs an avenue in a north-easterly direction to the core of the second star forest formed by a now dry goldfish pond which was excavated c. 1777. With the excavated soil a so-called trappenberg (because of its stepped construction) has been thrown up north-east of this pond, now a sloping hill. In the star forest, while retaining the formal structure, a landscape element has been incorporated: from the goldfish pond runs in a north-westerly direction an avenue planted with Scots pines and two arborvitaes (Tuya). From this same point runs in a westerly direction a now overgrown arbour 'paraplulaantje'. The landscape-style layout is more concentrated around the house. In front of the house lies a tapering meadow with clumps of trees flanked by wooded areas. This meadow dates from the first phase of the landscape-style layout. From the house ran across the meadow a sight line directed at the Dom Tower of Utrecht, which has now been lost due to the tall buildings of De Uithof. Behind the house is a modest and more enclosed landscape-style layout (second phase), whereby the character is determined by an excavated winding stream between thrown-up hills. Across the water feature runs one diagonal sight line to a meadow and arable land bordered by forests. The aforementioned stream continues its course along the west side of this meadow and is provided with a simple nineteenth-century brick arch bridge to provide access to the meadow. The surroundings of Beerschoten are further characterised by production forests interspersed with open meadows and arable land. The forests border on the woodland area of Houdringe and run into each other.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of general importance:

- because of the partly in structure and partly in detail well-preserved landscape-style layout from the beginning of the 19th century;

- because of the rarity value of a formal avenue system from the 18th century with elements from 18th-century Dutch garden architecture;

- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
