Inleiding

Introduction

Cross church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul in neogothic style designed by E.J. Margry from 1889-90.

Margry distinguished himself through strong polychromy and an abundance of details. In 1933 the current Sacred Heart altar replaced the original Mary altar. The construction of the high altar and the Saint Joseph altar were removed in the seventies. Around that time the platform in the choir was also built with a new altar on it, which was later replaced by yet another new altar.

The Stations of the Cross on the plastered side walls were painted by Herman Walstra in 1938, the painting in the western side chapel of the choir in 1935. The pews in the church were placed in the church just before or after the Second World War. The pew plan was slightly extended; the transept and the side chapels were incorporated as side aisles into the church. The stained glass of the church was also renewed in that period.

Description

The cross church is built in red brick under a gabled roof with grey slates in German bond, on which decorative motifs were originally placed beneath the ridge. In front of the nave stands a narrower square tower with an octagonal lantern, in which the entrance portal is situated. East of the tower the five-sided baptismal chapel, to the west a small staircase turret on an octagonal base. In the southern recesses of the transept and the nave lower entrance portals and chapels under tent roofs. On the north side the choir is closed off by a three-sided apse and flanked by chapels with three-sided absidioles. The facades are articulated by tapering buttresses, between which are pointed arch windows with stained glass and mortared water drips. Gratings for the windows of the baptismal chapel. Below the windows a projecting breastwork, which is finished with a roll moulding. Red roof tiles on the places where the buttresses taper.

Decorative bands of yellow facing brick and drip mouldings at various heights in the facades. Yellow facing brick is also used decoratively in the window surrounds and around the niches. The end facades, spout gables, are finished with natural stone roof ridge tiles. Dentil mouldings beneath the gutters. A roof turret at the crossing, finials on the ridge ends. Pinnacles on the southernmost buttresses of the nave. Small roof chapels with shutters under tent roofs in all roof sections.

Each bay of the nave has a two-light under a round window. In the southernmost bays no windows but niches. In the end facades of the transept four narrow coupled windows under a rose window. Above the rose window three narrow windows, which at the top follow the rising line of the facade. Pointed arch windows with simple tracery in the choir and the apse. In the lower extensions small windows and two-lights. In the entrance portals south of the transept right-angled wooden doors with wrought iron fittings and pointed arch-shaped fanlights with sandstone tracery under round windows. The small staircase turret next to the tower is articulated by drip mouldings and small climbing staircase lights.

In the front facade (south) of the tower is the main entrance of the church: a double wooden door with wrought iron cross hinges under a pointed arch-shaped fanlight with sandstone tracery. In the articulations above a row of six coupled pointed arch-shaped niches, a rose window in the midst of four round windows and a three-light. Above the entrance particularly rich decorative motifs in yellow and red facing brick. The buttresses on the corners of the tower are provided with niches and are crowned by simple pinnacles. High in the side facades of the substructure three-lights, in the lantern two-lights with sound holes. Above them clock faces made of tiles, interspersed with two-lights. Just below the spire a round arch frieze and a roll moulding. The spire is crowned by a weathercock.

On the ground floor against the spout gable of the western transept arm a flat extension with an entrance on the west side. The sacristy is built against the eastern side chapel. This extension with spout gable is partly concealed behind the flat-roofed garage which adjoins the eastern transept arm. In the front facade of the garage a double arched wooden garage door with triangular windows in it. On either side narrow stained glass side lights.

Interior

A large part of the interior has been preserved in its original state.

The plastered walls and columns are interspersed with pilaster strips, pilasters and arches in fair-faced brickwork. The capitals, the corbels on which the statues rest, the baldachins and the balustrade of the rood screen are carved in sandstone. The sculpture is executed in hardstone, as are the small columns between the windows in the apse. The nave is covered by a painted pointed arch barrel vault of Swedish pine wood on wooden principals and collars. In the barrel vault cast iron rose-shaped ventilation grilles are fitted. The side chapels, the choir and the apse are vaulted by plastered cross-ribbed vaults with ribs of fair-faced brickwork.

On the crossing piers, at the crossing of transept and nave, eight statues are placed under baldachins. Two of these are the wooden statues of Peter and Paul, which come from the old church at Randenburg.

Further, among other things, are preserved: the substructure of the high altar of 1890 by Margry, in which are the relics of Fortunatus and Placidus; the pulpit by Margry from 1894, with reliefs of Peter and Paul, on a marble base under a wooden sounding board; two built-in confessionals with wooden doors and a baptismal font.

Valuation

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul dating from 1850 is of general importance due to its cultural-historical value as an exponent of the building boom of Roman Catholic churches following the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853.

Furthermore, the cross church is of general importance due to its architecture-historical value as a representative example of neogothic building style and in the oeuvre of architect E.J. Margry.

In urban planning terms, the cross church is of general importance due to its characterful positioning in Reeuwijk village and due to the functional and spatial relationship with the other components of the church complex.

The exterior of the church is well-preserved, and many original components of the interior are still extant.
