Inleiding

Introduction

Detached FELLOWSHIP HOUSE, of which the timber rear section (hall) executed in craft-traditional style dates from 1903-1910 and the brick front section executed in rationalist style dates from 1921. The timber hall was designed by P.J. Peeters. The fellowship house had no lodging function, but served as an association building and is located on the western side of the Amstel in the polder Ronde Hoep. Currently (1995) the rear part of the building has a catering function and the front section a residential function.

Description

Fellowship house built on a T-shaped ground plan, whereby the front section is built in brick and the rear hall in timber.

The front section has two storeys under a broken hipped roof with red tuiles du nord. The ridge line runs parallel to the Amstel. Two red ceramic ridge cresting pieces stand on the roof angles. Various roof dormers have been installed in the roof. Unless otherwise stated, the window bays in the front section contain rectangular wooden casement windows with brick drip mouldings. The facade is finished with a wooden gutter running all around on wooden brackets.

The symmetrically arranged front facade (E) has a width of three double window bays. The emphasis lies on the middle bay which forms a central projection over two storeys with a pediment gable. On the ground floor the middle bay contains the entrance, consisting of a double door clamped into a porch with fanlight. The porch is provided with decorative brickwork. Above the entrance is a tile panel with the text "GEZELLENHUIS". On the first floor there are two six-light casement windows. The central projection is finished with a pediment gable set under a mansard roof with a herringbone-arch window. On either side of the central projection there is a facade section with a width of one window bay with on each bay in both storeys a double six-light casement window.

The left side facade (S) has a width of two window bays. On the ground floor the left bay contains a rectangular wooden door with fanlight and the right bay a six-light casement window. On the first floor the window bays originally contained a four-light casement window.

The right side facade (N) has in both storeys a six-light casement window.

Against the rear facade (W) the association hall is built. The hall consists of a high hall with on either side a lower side aisle. The hall is built in rabbeted timber sections above a brick plinth. The hall is finished with a gabled roof with half-hipped end on the west side, the side aisles each have a lean-to roof. The roofs are covered with red Dutch tiles. The hall has a depth of nine bays; the internal structure consists of ten timber roof trusses with beams. In the exterior, beneath the roof edge both in the side aisles and at the hall wooden ribbon windows with multi-light glazing bars with wooden drip mouldings have been installed. The rear facade has a high-placed rectangular wooden window with eight-light glazing bars.

Evaluation

The fellowship house completed in two phases is of general importance from a typological, cultural and architectural-historical point of view as a characteristic example of an association building dating from the first decades of the twentieth century in a partly craft-traditional and partly rationalist building style. Furthermore, the building has ensemble value in relation to the nearby church and rectory as a historically-functional component of the St. Urbanus parish buildings.
