Inleiding

Introduction

The St. Bonifaciusschool, built as an R.-K. SCHOOL for boys, was designed in 1917 in the style of the Nieuwe Haagse School by The Hague architect J.J. (Co) Brandes, in collaboration with J. Th. Wouters, with whom he worked from 1909-1918. Following his initial sketch designs, Co Brandes envisaged an assembly of seven cubic building masses that interlock in a staggered manner. This concept with a total of thirteen classrooms was completed in 1929 under the direction of Wouters, resulting in a somewhat U-shaped floor plan. Since that time it has been in use as a girls' school for, among others, the Maria Annaschool and a ULO-school.

In 1933-1934 the southwestern wing was added according to a design by the architects' office of Wouters. In 1954 followed the extension on the northwestern side according to a design by P.N. de Bruyn. This caused the original entrance to be discontinued and the vestibule to be converted into a staff room. To the northeast of the school is a gymnasium dating from 1931 that was designed by P.N. de Bruyn and was expanded in the 1980s. These extensions are of subordinate significance for the protection of the building. The covered playground from 1929 with garden wall and bicycle shed was largely demolished in 1980.

Co Brandes was clearly influenced in his designs, partly through his contacts with Jan Wils, by the work of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Characteristic is the dynamic interplay of cubic projecting and receding building volumes, whereby the classrooms are grouped around the centrally located hall and the service rooms. It was the first time that Brandes used flat roofs as covering. The linking of the large rectangular building volumes (the classrooms) is expressed organically on the exterior through the plastic rhythm of the facades and through the large window openings. Characteristic are the balanced proportions, the emphasis of horizontal elements through concrete canopies and horizontal decorative bands. Furthermore, there is considerable attention to detailing and use of materials, such as the application of slate tiles with blackened tarred brick elements and terracotta.

In his design for the Bonifaciusschool, Co Brandes clearly developed his principles for the first time, which is why he can be regarded as the founder of the so-called 'Nieuwe Haagse School'. This architectural style became during the Interbellum period particularly in the The Hague region a very popular building style, which was notably applied in housing construction in the 1920s.

The school is located in an area designated within the framework of the MIP with special values, whereby the urban planning and social-historical character is determined to a large extent by the R.-K. St. Willibrorduskerk, a design by N. Molenaar from 1907. This led to the laying out of a cemetery and also to the construction in the immediate vicinity of a presbytery, patronage building and convent, all designed by N. Molenaar. Furthermore, in the vicinity of the church various schools of Catholic character were built, including the R.-K. Bonifaciusschool.

Description

A freestanding, composite and symmetrically arranged three-storey building mass with basement, under flat roofs, has in main form a U-shaped floor plan. On the roof stand various tall, decoratively brickwork chimneys in English style that reinforce the vertical rhythm. The facades, rising high on all sides, have a rhythmic articulation with risalits that differ from each other in height. The entire building contains rectangular closed facade openings, whereby the windows placed between roll-mouldings are largely provided with single and composite window openings with glazing bars.

The facades are built above a high plinth, executed with roll-moulding, of dark greyish brick, built up in red brick in header bond with roll-mouldings above the plinth, doors and windows. The top storey is accentuated by two roll-mouldings, slightly projecting in brickwork (halfway and below the cornice that closes the facade). The parapets are likewise covered by roll-mouldings, partly projecting in brickwork. The edges of the facades are finished with red brick frost tiles. The decoratively brickwork decorative bands are partly recessed and executed with red slate tiles and black-coloured header bricks. Decoratively brickwork open-work appears in various places in the facade.

The front facade (northwest), which is not clearly visible due to the extension from 1954 and no longer functions as such, has a symmetrical layout consisting of a projecting central section with central risalit and an extended entrance section, flanked by staggered projecting cubic building volumes. The entrance section has a wide, partly executed with slate tiles, round arch with terracotta abutment stones, which rests on pillars executed with decorative brickwork. Below it, within the shallow entrance portico executed with staggered receding roof edges, is a (renewed) double door with round arch fanlight, provided with vertical glazing bars and leaded glass. In front of it lies an entrance step flanked by low walls with a platform, provided with paving tiles. Above the round arch of the entrance section, which is closed by terracotta tiles, is a terracotta tile panel with in bas-relief the text: "ROOMSCH=KATH/MEISJESSCHOLEN". On the storey above is a large window opening. In the flanking narrow facade sections are small rectangular four-pane windows. These are in turn flanked by narrow recessed facade sections, provided with small toilet windows. Of the staggered receding corner pavilion the two narrow projections on the ground floor and storey have a single, then a double window. The wide end facade has in the central risalit on both storeys a large window opening. The side facades facing the courtyard are partly blind, partly provided with small windows.

The rear facade (southeast) likewise has a symmetrical layout with a rhythmic articulation with cubic projecting building volumes that differ from each other in height and in depth, which are coupled by narrow recessed facade sections. The central risalit of three window axes has centrally an extended entrance section. The entrance section consists of an expansive entrance portico with a brickwork staircase, flanked by parapets, which carry decoratively brickwork columns, on which the canopy of the entrance rests. The latter has the character of a (false) balcony, executed with horizontally brickwork decorative bands. Above it is the large six-part window opening of the stairwell, which reinforces the vertical effect of the entrance section. The corner sections, articulated with wider risalits, each have on the ground floor and on the storey a large composite window opening for the classrooms. The flanking, recessed narrow facade sections have on ground floor and storey each a narrow four-pane window. The recessed facade section, which couples the central and corner sections to each other, has on the ground floor and on the storey a double window.

The right (northeast) side facade has a broad projecting middle section with in the raised risaliting section on the ground floor and storey a large window opening. In the flanking narrow recessed facade sections are small, rectangular four-pane windows. To the right of this is a narrow projecting building volume of the vestibule with entrance portico. The portico with double single-pane door consists of a staircase of a few steps with platform flanked by walls under a flat concrete canopy, which rests on pilasters placed against the facade with decoratively brickwork decorative bands. On the storey above is placed above a projecting building volume a high-placed double four-pane window. The two recessed facade ends are blind. The left (southwest) side facade has a similar facade layout to the right. The left facade section connects from the corridor to the one-storey wing from 1935.

Interior In the interior the original floor plan layout, the detailing and the use of materials are largely preserved. The floors of corridors and hall are laid with glazed tiles in various grid patterns in cream/terra, the walls have a high wainscoting with terracotta tiles, the stucco ceilings simple decorations. The doors are panel doors with upper panes. The original vestibule with flanking storage space has been converted into one staff room, so that the opposite entrance under the stairwell now serves as the main entrance. Opposite the original entrance lies a vaulted corridor intersected with belt arches, an elongated hall. From this the corridors open out, which are rhythmically interrupted by belt arches and the central stairwell. This is an imperial staircase with brickwork, heavily executed balusters, among others enlivened with projecting brickwork horizontal decorative bands. Also terracotta tiles as covering of the balustrade and hardstone upper abutment stones. The railing/handrail is of wood. On the storey the parapet is concavely vaulted. In the classrooms the original symmetrical layout is likewise largely preserved with built-in and fixed cupboards, small fireplace surrounds and blackboards. On either side of the original vestibule and the classroom above are toilet groups.

The floor plan layout on the storey is comparable to that of the ground floor. To the northeast of the stairwell a staircase leads to the attic floor. On the east side two rooms have been combined.

Valuation

The school is of general importance on account of its architectural and cultural-historical value: - as a particular expression of the development that school building underwent at the beginning of the 20th century; - as an early work from the oeuvre of a leading Dutch architect, who with this is regarded as the founder of the Nieuwe Haagse School, an important architectural movement in Dutch architectural history; - due to the aesthetic qualities of the main form and detailing and because of the particular coherence between interior and exterior; - because of the recognizability and the high degree of integrity of interior and exterior. - of urban planning and social-historical importance because of the coherence with the other R.-K. buildings in the vicinity.
