GARDENER'S COTTAGE, belonging to the complex "Casa Carmeli". The cottage was built around 1870 in an eclectic architectural style, in keeping with the main house, which is characterised by a combination of neoclassical, Italianate and English neogothic style elements. The gardener's cottage has some rustic details, such as the woodcarving along the roof edges, which was customary at that time for service dwellings belonging to country houses.

The gardener's cottage is separated from the Vogelenzangseweg by a small garden and is located on the northwest side of a walled garden situated between the main house and the gardener's cottage.

The cottage was later extended at the rear with, among other things, a stone and a wooden storage building. At that time the main entrance was also moved to the south side of the stone extension. In 1980 the interior layout was somewhat altered.

Description

The house is built on a rectangular ground plan with a trapezoidal extension on the southwest side, in which the "best room" is located on the ground floor. The building is constructed of whitewashed brick with a dark brown painted plinth and consists on the north side of one storey, on the south side of two storeys. Both parts are covered with a gently sloping gabled roof covered with mastic and fitted with eaves overhang and wind braces along the gable tops. The low part also has moulded gutter lines; the two-storey building volume is fitted with richer detailing, such as carved consoles beneath the roof overhang and broad gutters. At the front, the wind braces here are connected to each other by a horizontal beam with a central cartouche intersecting the roof ridge.

The windows on the front (west) and south side are fitted with shutters and wooden cornices on the ground floor.

At the front in the one-storey section there is a cross window; in the higher, trapezoidal part a three-part window in the middle plane, both on the ground floor and on the upper floor, and single windows in the sloping planes, also on both storeys.

The southern side gable has a T-shaped window on the ground floor and directly above it a double opening window. A similar window arrangement is found in the northern side gable of the low building volume. The ground floor window is, however, a six-pane sash window, with shutters but without a cornice. This building volume is fitted on both the north and east sides at the level of the upper floor with 19th-century ornamental wall anchors.

Most of the eastern facades are obscured from view by the later extensions.

The gardener's cottage is of general importance as a historically-functional component of the complex "Casa Carmeli" and on account of cultural and architectural historical value: as a good and increasingly rare example of a service dwelling belonging to a villa from the third quarter of the 19th century, in eclectic style; on account of the largely intact principal form and detailing and the materials used. The gardener's cottage has ensemble and situational value on account of the well-preserved coherence with the villa "Carmeli" and on account of its prominent position along the Vogelenzangseweg.
