Inleiding

Introduction

DWELLING HOUSE, built in 1867 as the parsonage of the Dutch Reformed community at Nieuwe Niedorp, located on the north side of the Dorpsstraat. The dwelling house with ridge line perpendicular to the Dorpsstraat and separated from it by a waterway, was inhabited around 1900 by vicar J.C. Schermerhorn. The rear gable of the dwelling house has been altered in articulation and detailing, without damaging the monumental character of the dwelling house.

Description

The dwelling house is built on an almost square ground plan, constructed in purple-red brickwork in vertical bond on cemented and grey-painted plinth. The building has two storeys under a gently sloping gabled roof with overhang, covered with red and black Dutch tiles. The roof is provided on the front with carved wind vanes and wood carving at the apex; on the sides with a moulded gutter line supported by consoles. The roof truss structure consists of collar-tie trusses.

The symmetrically arranged front gable (S) is three bays wide and is bordered at the corners by white plastered pilasters with spandrels. In the central projecting section, above a stone step, is the main entrance: a double panelled door with fanlight within a white-painted, moulded, slightly curved surround at the top. On the storey a similar door - however with glass panes - and surround which is crowned by a stucco ornament. These doors open onto a balcony, resting on consoles and provided with cast-iron railings. Above the French doors is a small, round window with surround.

The left bay of the front gable is identical to the right- and contains on the first storey one and on the ground floor two large wooden T-shaped sash windows with slightly curved head jamb. Above the windows are stucco, moulded lists (so-called eyebrows) applied.

The left side gable (W) has from right to left: double, opening French doors provided with a glazed canopy on wooden colonettes, followed by a large wooden T-shaped sash window with stone drip stone. Under the eaves is a small opening window.

The right side gable (E) has from left to right: two large wooden T-shaped sash frames (the same as the windows in the front gable) and a small opening window under the eaves. Below the first-mentioned window is a small inscription stone and between the two sash frames a large stone plaque; both with inscription to commemorate the first stone laying in 1867.

Valuation

The former parsonage is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as a largely well-preserved example of a dwelling house built in eclectic building style as a residence for the notable classes in the second half of the 19th century. Furthermore, the dwelling house has ensemble value as a prominent component of a well-preserved linear settlement structure, i.e. a street village with waterway.
