Inleiding
WATERTOREN in de stijl van de Late Amsterdamse School, in 1924 gebouwd als onderdeel van de Koninklijke Verenigde Tapijtfabrieken, naar ontwerp van de Waddinxveense architect P.D. Stuurman. Inwendig is het torenuurwerk van Eysbouts bewaard gebleven. Het fabrieksgebouw in dezelfde bouwstijl is in 1996 gesloopt. De toren is behalve bij de fabriek ook in gebruik geweest voor drinkwaterlevering aan inwoners van de gemeente Moordrecht en als openbaar badhuis. Sinds 1978 is de toren buiten gebruik, het reservoir en de overige installaties van de firma Oskar Kary & Co uit Bremen zijn verwijderd.
Omschrijving
De rechthoekige toren is in vijf lagen boven een stalen fundering opgetrokken in bruine baksteen. De toren heeft een vierkante plattegrond en de gevels zijn decoratief gemetseld in de stijl van de Late Amsterdamse School. De schacht is op de hoeken en in het midden voorzien van steunberen die zich naar boven toe drie maal verjongen. In de spaarvelden tussen de steunberen smalle hoge vensters over twee lagen en licht risalerende muurdammen. De gevels van de vierde bouwlaag van de schacht, die iets terug ligt, zijn gemetseld in verticale alternerende smalle stroken. De toren wordt bekroond door een vierkante reservoirommanteling waarop vierkante tableaus van gele en blauwe tegels met wijzerplaten van het torenuurwerk zijn aangebracht. Inwendig zijn de betonnen vloeren, trappen en de kolom in het midden van de toren bewaard gebleven. Deze kolom ondersteunt de betonnen vloer waarop het ronde stalen reservoir oorspronkelijk rustte.
Waardering
De watertoren is van algemeen belang vanwege cultuurhistorische en industrieel-archeologische waarde, als oorspronkelijke fabriekswatertoren bij de Koninklijke Verenigde Tapijtfabrieken. Het is een representatief voorbeeld van industrieel erfgoed uit de periode 1850-1940 in Nederland.
De watertoren is tevens van algemeen belang wegens architectuur- en bouwhistorische waarde vanwege de kenmerkende typologie met het betonskelet en een bakstenen mantel in de stijl van de Late Amsterdamse School. Het exterieur en de inwendige betonconstructie zijn in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering gaaf bewaard gebleven.
De watertoren is in hoge mate van stedebouwkundig belang vanwege de zeer beeldbepalende situering in het silhouet van Moordrecht.

WATER TOWER in the style of the Late Amsterdam School, built in 1924 as part of the Koninklijke Verenigde Tapijtfabrieken, designed by Waddinxveen architect P.D. Stuurman. Description
The rectangular tower is constructed in five storeys above a steel foundation in brown brick. The tower has a square floor plan and the facades are decoratively laid in the style of the Late Amsterdam School. The shaft is provided at the corners and in the middle with buttresses which taper upwards three times. In the spandrels between the buttresses narrow tall windows spanning two storeys and slightly projecting wall piers. The facades of the fourth storey of the shaft, which is set back slightly, are laid in vertically alternating narrow stripes. The tower is crowned by a square reservoir casing on which square panels of yellow and blue tiles with clock faces of the tower clockwork are mounted. Internally the concrete floors, stairs and the column in the middle of the tower have been preserved. This column supports the concrete floor on which the round steel reservoir originally rested.
Valuation
The water tower is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and industrial-archaeological value, as the original factory water tower at the Koninklijke Verenigde Tapijtfabrieken. It is a representative example of industrial heritage from the period 1850-1940 in the Netherlands.
