Inleiding
Voormalige PORTIERSWONING, behorende bij het complex van voormalig weeshuis, portierswoning en erfscheiding. Het voormalige protestantse weeshuis is aan de Grote Kerkstraat gesitueerd en opgenomen in het register van rijksmonumenten onder monumentnummer: 14318. De voormalige portierswoning met poort, gebouwd in de stijl van de Neo-Renaissance aan het einde van de 19de eeuw is gelegen direct aan het Jan van Nieuwenhuizenplein en van het voormalige weeshuis gescheiden.
N.B. In 1997 is een bouwvergunning afgegeven voor het maken van een aanbouw aan de achterzijde van de woning op de begane grond en dakkapellen in het dakvlak aan de linkerzijde. De houten deur in de topgevel boven de poort wordt vervangen door een venster.
Omschrijving
Voormalige portierswoning, gebouwd op rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaande uit een bouwlaag en een zolderverdieping onder zadeldak met de noklijn evenwijdig aan de weg en gedekt met rode Hollandse pannen, en met aan de straatkant (w) een poort onder steekkappen met de noklijn haaks op de weg.
De voorgevel (W) is opgetrokken in rode baksteen op een uitgemetselde plint en wordt horizontaal geleed door zandstenen speklagen. De gootlijst rust op gesneden consoles. Twee kruisvensters met terugliggende vijftien-ruits schuiframen en negen-ruits bovenlichten en hardstenen vensterbanken onder ruime rondboog met zandstenen sluit- en boogstenen, opgevuld met siermetselwerk in boogmotief, verlichten het woongedeelte. De poort aan de linkerzijde heeft een risalerende trapgevel met hardstenen platen op de treden. De poortingang wordt omgeven door een zandstenen omlijsting van een gebeeldhouwde rondboog op lisenen en een rondboogvormig fronton met open bovenzijde. Het fronton is opgevuld met een beeldhouwwerk van een mannen- en vrouwenfiguur die het wapen van Edam vasthouden. Een dubbel ijzeren spijlenhek sluit de ingang van de poort af. In de trapgevel bevindt zich een twaalf-ruitsvenster. Het risalerende topstuk steunt op een gebeeldhouwd kopje.

The former Protestant orphanage is situated at Grote Kerkstraat and entered in the national monuments register under monument number: 14318. The former porter's lodge with gate, built in the Neo-Renaissance style at the end of the 19th century, is located directly at Jan van Nieuwenhuizenplein and separated from the former orphanage.
N.B. In 1997 a building permit was issued for the construction of an extension on the rear of the dwelling on the ground floor and roof dormers in the roof plane on the left side. The wooden door in the top gable above the gate is to be replaced by a window.
Description
Former porter's lodge, built on rectangular plan and consisting of one storey and an attic storey under a gabled roof with the ridge line parallel to the road and covered with red Dutch tiles, and with on the street side (W) a gate under a pitch roof with the ridge line perpendicular to the road.
The front facade (W) is constructed in red brick on a rendered plinth and is articulated horizontally by sandstone string courses. The gutter moulding rests on cut consoles. Two cross windows with recessed fifteen-pane sash windows and nine-pane fanlights and hard stone window sills under spacious round arches with sandstone keystones and arch stones, filled with decorative brickwork in arch motif, light the living area. The gate on the left side has a projecting stepped gable with hard stone slabs on the steps. The gate entrance is surrounded by a sandstone surround of a sculptured round arch on pilasters and a round-arched pediment with open top. The pediment is filled with sculptural work of a male and female figure holding the coat of arms of Edam. A double iron railing closes the gate entrance. In the stepped gable is a twelve-pane window. The projecting top rests on a sculptured head.
The left side facade (N) is plastered.
The right side facade (S) is plastered and contains a double window off-centre to the left on the attic storey.
The rear facade (E) is plastered.
The facades in the gate are plastered, the ceiling is composed of wooden beams and planks.
