The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Diaconal dwelling built around 1885, possibly designed by the State or Provincial Water Board, in Waterstaatsstijl (Water Board Style). The dwelling is characteristic of the densification of the original building pattern.

In 1991 the dwelling was renovated by architect H. Stove. Monumental characteristics were restored to the exterior. The interior has been modernised.

The building forms part of the protected town townscape.

The protection concerns the main mass and the original and restored detailing of the facades; the interior is of secondary importance for protection.

Description

Dwelling built on a T-shaped ground plan, with rendered facades, over one storey with mezzanino/loft storey, partly with basement, under gabled roofs covered with asphalt paper. The building has facade articulation by means of pilaster strips. In the wall panels facade openings and blind niches with brick arches. The ends (SE and SW) contain two bays with a mirrored ground plan. A plinth and an offset moulding run around, in which the mezzanino windows are placed. All original facade openings have brick arches.

In the corner (E) the entrance is located, a panelled door with an oval faceted pane beneath a two-pane fanlight. On either side of the door a two-pane window beneath a segmental arch, with window sill stones. To the right of the entrance composition two six-pane sash windows in the wall panels.

The NE facade has two blind wall panels. The gable facade on the SE is identical to that on the southwest. The facades have two sash windows, two mezzanino windows and a louvre window at the top. The facades at the inner corner of the ends have one sash window.

The northwest facade has on the right two blind bays of the end. Along the gutter here a decorative moulding. In the remaining four bays modern windows.

Valuation

Diaconal dwelling of cultural, architectural-historical and urban significance:

- in the urbanisation history of the peat extraction

- because of the defining location on the canal within the protected village townscape

- because of the typology

- because of the distinctive architectural design

- because of the rarity

- because of the integrity of the exterior
