Inleiding
Op 10 feb. 1908 kreeg rijksbouwmeester C.H. Peters te 's Gravenhage vergunning voor het bouwen van een postgebouw te Nieuw-Amsterdam. Het betreft een standaardontwerp, zoals dat ook uitgevoerd is in bijv. Emmen en Zuidlaren, in de voor dit gebouwtype gebruikelijke zgn. postkantoorgotiek, d.w.z. in neo-Hollandse-Renaissance stijl met gotische en chalet-stijl kenmerken. De zeer kloeke dakruiter die bij dit ontwerp hoorde en een kenmerkend onderdeel is van de grotere postkantoren van Peters, is hier niet meer aanwezig.
In 1978 is het interieur van het postkantoor gedeeltelijk veranderd door de Rijksgebouwendienst.
In 1939 is, vrijstaand, een onbewaakte automatische telefooncentrale "tot automatiseering van de Rijkstelefoon" achter het postkantoor neergezet.
De bescherming betreft het hoofdvolume en de detaillering van de gevels.
Omschrijving
Postkantoor met woning opgetrokken in baksteen vanaf een rechthoekige plattegrond over twee bouwlagen met aanbouwen over één bouwlaag aan de achterzijde, alle onder met rode bouletpannen gedekte zadeldaken. Gemetselde plint. Onder de vensters van de begane grond een natuurstenen afzaat rondom. Onder de vensters van de verdieping een natuurstenen waterlijst eveneens rondom. T-vormige schuifvensters, segmentboogvormig gesloten, met een drieruits bovenlicht, waarvan de ruiten eveneens segmentboogvormig gesloten zijn.
In de hoofdgevel drie maal drie vensterassen met op beide verdiepingen een T- venster.
De eerste en de zevende travee hebben een (gewijzigde) entree. In het dakschild twee dakkapellen onder steekkap, met wolfeind, piron en windveren en een zesruits venster.
De linker kopgevel heeft op de begane grond een T-venster met aan weerszijden een blindnis. Op de verdieping aan de zijkanten twee smalle schuifvensters met tweeruits bovenlicht. In de geveltop vijf gekoppelde nissen, naar het midden toe breder, de middelste met een klein schuifvenster met tweeruits bovenlicht. In de geveltop een schot in chaletstijl. Op de verdiepingscheidingen in totaal vier muur ankers.
De rechter kopgevel heeft eenzelfde indeling als de linker. Op de begane grond echter een moderne aanbouw. Op de verdieping links een blindnis i.p.v. een T- venster.
Aan de achterzijde de aanbouwen over één laag. De gevels hiervan zijn door moderne uitbredingen grotendeels gewijzigd. In de achtergevel drie vensters, zoals de bovenlichten in de voorgevel en een geveltop zoals in de kopgevels van de voorbouw. De kopgevel van de dwarsbouw heeft eenzelfde indeling, echter met twee vensters. Tussen deze gevel en de linker kopgevel van de hoofdbouw een uitbouw onder platdak, met een gevelindeling als van de hoofdbouw, met twee T- vensters.

On 10 February 1908 state architect C.H. Peters in The Hague received permission to build a post office building in Nieuw-Amsterdam. Post office with dwelling constructed of brick from a rectangular floor plan over two storeys with extensions over one storey at the rear, all under gabled roofs covered with red boulet tiles. Mortared plinth. Below the windows of the ground floor a natural stone sill all around. Below the windows of the upper storey a natural stone drip moulding also all around. T-shaped sash windows, closed with segmental arch, with a three-pane fanlight, the panes of which are also segmental arch closed.
In the main gable three times three window bays with a T-window on both storeys.
The first and seventh bay have a (modified) entrance. In the roof surface two roof dormers under hip gable, with half-hip end, roof ridge and wind vanes and a six-pane window.
The left gable end has on the ground floor a T-window with a blind opening on either side. On the upper storey on the sides two narrow sash windows with two-pane fanlight. In the gable top five coupled niches, becoming wider towards the middle, the central one with a small sash window with two-pane fanlight. In the gable top a shutter in chalet style. On the storey divisions in total four wall anchors.
The right gable end has the same arrangement as the left. On the ground floor however a modern extension. On the upper storey a blind opening on the left instead of a T-window.
At the rear the extensions over one storey. The gables of these have been largely altered by modern extensions. In the rear gable three windows, as the fanlights in the front gable and a gable top as in the gable ends of the front building. The gable end of the transverse structure has the same arrangement, however with two windows. Between this gable and the left gable end of the main building an extension under a flat roof, with a gable arrangement as of the main building, with two T-windows.
