STAKE FARMHOUSE of the reversed West Frisian type, situated on the north side of the Dorpsweg and separated from it by an iron gate. The exterior, which shows influences of eclecticism alongside the region-specific building tradition, dates from the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century, but the farmhouse may be older in its core. The farmhouse has undergone some alterations, but without damaging the monumental value.

Description

Stake farmhouse built on an almost square ground plan with hipped roof with black pan tiles provided with central lozenge form. On the front side (S) the hipped roof is broken through by a projecting central section with overhanging gabled roof and with identical tiles as on the hipped roof. On the rear side (N) the hipped roof is broken through by a round chimney on a square base. The chimney is built up in red brick with yellow brick for decoration. The ridge lines of the gabled and hipped roof stand almost perpendicular to the Dorpsweg. At the transition from gabled to hipped roof there is still a square base of a chimney. The internal wooden square-frame construction consists of four pillars with tie-beam frame without overhang. The construction shows signs of alteration, presumably resulting from an adaptation of the older square-frame construction to the nineteenth-century masonry of the stake farmhouse. The interior contains, among other things, the threshing floor of red clinker bricks. The masonry of the stake farmhouse is built up in red brick, which on the front side is alternated with courses and other decoration in white and pink lime sandstone. The symmetrical front side (S) has a rusticated plinth in plaster. The aforementioned projecting central section has on the ground floor two sash windows, on the first floor one sash window and in the gable end a round iron window. Both sides of the central section have on the ground floor and first floor a narrow sash window, of which the specimen on the first floor is arched. The overhanging gabled roof of the central section has cut wind braces with hanging vertical ornamental motifs and cut cornice lines. The facade panels flanking the central section each have a pilaster on the external corners, are each terminated by a main cornice and each have two window axes. The axis directly to the right of the central section contains a panelled door with delicately forged door furniture in flower form and arched fanlight, the remaining axes have sash windows which, like the windows on the ground floor of the central section, are provided with arched sash windows with T-profile and cut board behind which the sun-screening was originally drawn up. The left side (W) still contains two arched six-pane sash windows and a smaller four-pane window. The recessed threshing door is located entirely on the left. The right side (O) is the original stable wall which is now provided with six-pane sash windows. The rear side (N) still has a number of arched iron stable windows.

Valuation

The eclectically decorated stake farmhouse with accompanying gate is of general importance from an architectural and cultural-historical point of view as a largely well-preserved example of rural building from the nineteenth century. The prominently situated stake farmhouse has ensemble value as part of the protected village townscape Twisk.
