Inleiding

LICHTOPSTAND gebouwd in 1884.

- als zeldzaam geworden voorbeeld van kustverlichting in Nederland, in casu een opengewerkte gietijzeren lichtopstand;

Introduction

LIGHT BEACON built in 1884. Originally the light beacon was located in De Haukes, on the west coast of the island of Wieringen. After Wieringen was connected to the mainland and the Wieringermeer was drained, the light beacon was relocated around 1929 to the beginning of the Afsluitdijk, at the head of the leidam on the Wadden Sea side, between the lock gates and the first group of drainage sluices. In 2017 the light beacon was relocated again, to its current location on the Oostkade.

Description

The tapered cast-iron light beacon consists of four storeys on a hexagonal base and is crowned by a lighthouse on an overhanging circular platform with balustrading around it. The lighthouse is accessible via an open iron spiral staircase. At the foot of this staircase, in the tapered form of the light beacon, stands a hexagonal storage building under a tent roof.

The red painted cast-iron frameworks that make up the storeys of the light beacon are provided with two curved diagonal connections that cross above the middle. At the intersection of these two connections a knob-shaped ornament is applied. The frameworks are screwed to each other by means of cast flanges, mostly on the outside. At the corners and in the middle, pointed ornaments are applied.

The likewise red painted cast-iron spiral staircase that runs along the inside of the beacon has two beautifully ornamented banister knobs. The spiral staircase runs up to the partly cylindrical, partly octagonal cast-iron lighthouse, where it emerges in a projection on the west side.

The likewise red painted lighthouse has large windows all around (under a slightly overhanging moulding) and a dome-shaped roof on which a white painted cast-iron weather vane stands. Around the lighthouse runs a balustrade with open-work railing. The ornament of this railing consists again of two intersecting diagonals, in this case two one above the other, with an oval rosette at the intersection.

On the west side of the light beacon, a hoisting mechanism with pulley is attached to the balustrade.

Valuation

The light beacon is of constructional, civil-engineering and architectural-historical value:

- as a rare surviving example of coastal lighting in the Netherlands, in this case an open-work cast-iron light beacon;

- as an intact example of the application of a cast-iron structure in the second half of the 19th century in the Netherlands.

The light beacon is of socio-historical value as a rare surviving element from the history of coastal defence in the Netherlands.
