Inleiding

R.K. ST.-LAURENTIUSKERK daterend uit 1871-1873 naar ontwerp van E.J. Margry in neogothische bouwstijl.

Omschrijving

In baksteen met gebruik van natuursteen uitgevoerde driebeukige, basilicale kruiskerk op een gemetselde, met hardsteen afgezette plint onder een samenstel van zadel- en lessenaarsdaken belegd met maasleien, met vijfzijdig gesloten koor, ingangstoren op vierkante grondslag met drie geledingen en naaldspits en ter rechterzijde van de toren een kleine vijfzijdige traptoren.

De gevels worden horizontaal geleed door waterlijsten en enkele of per twee gekoppelde spitsboogvensters met glas-in-loodramen en afgesloten door een muizentandlijst. Middenschip ter lengte van zes traveeën, gescheiden door steunberen, en een torentravee.

Zijgevels van transept met drie gekoppelde lancetvensters waarboven een natuurstenen roosvenster is aangebracht. Toren met in eerste geleding grote spitsboogvormige entree met dubbele houten deur met in archivolt een gestucte lijst op consoles waarin een bovenlicht is opgenomen met drie lancetvensters en een kleine vierpas. Op overgang naar de vrij gesloten tweede geleding maaswerk. Derde geleding met lancetvormige openingen met galmgaten waarboven wimbergen bekroond door hogels en aan vier zijden een uurwijzerplaat. Het interieur van de kerk is grotendeels in schoon metselwerk uitgevoerd. Drieledige wandopbouw bestaande uit scheibogen, schijntriforium met drie gekoppelde blinde keperboogvensters, waarboven de lichtbeuk, bestaande uit drie met kleurig glas-in-lood ingevulde lancetvensters. Rood gekleurde bundelpijlers op hardstenen voet met gevarieerde bladkapitelen van waaruit onder meer de witgepleisterde colonetten opgaan waarop de gewelfaanzetten van de kap rusten. Het middenschip wordt overwelfd door een in mozaïekpatroon beschilderd houten tongewelf in zachte kleuren met onder andere palmetmotieven. Koor en zijbeuken zijn in baksteen overwelfd. Achter in de kerk bevindt zich de orgeltribune met opengewerkte balustrade in neogothische vormentaal. Neogothisch hoofdaltaar in marmer en eikenhout met bijbelse voorstellingen van de firma Cuypers uit 1929. Doopkapel met originele tegelvloer naar ontwerp van E.J. Margry met een in verschillende marmersoorten uitgevoerd doopvont met neogothisch deksel; de kapel wordt afgesloten door een rood-goud beschilderd sierhekwerk vervaardigd door J. Geilswijk. Oorspronkelijke tegelvoer in het middenschip en zijbeuken in zwarte en rode tegelpatronen gelegd, in het koor in gele, witte en zwarte tegelpatronen gelegd. In het koor nog enkele delen van negentiende-eeuwse muurschilderingen. Originele houten banken in midden- en zijbeuken. Drie neogothische biechtstoelen, waarvan twee deels tegen de wand ingebouwd. Vijf laat-negentiende-eeuwse kleine beelden, afkomstig uit de oude preekstoel, bevinden zich tegen de linker zijwand van de dwarsbeuk. In de kleine altaartafel een vroeg-twintigste-eeuws reliëf met voorstelling uit de vroegere communiebank. Verder enkele negentiende-eeuwse gepolychromeerde heiligenbeelden onder baldakijn (H. Anna van Santen op beschilderde zuil met signatuur op sokkel van Iac Verhagen; H. Laurentius eveneens op een beschilderde zuil en H. Caecilia). Veelkleurige glas-in-loodvensters met Christus- en heiligenvoorstellingen in het koor; overige glas-in-loodvensters in transept en zijbeuken met gestileerde patronen in lichte, zachte kleuren. Verder oorspronkelijke deuren. Mechanisch torenuurwerk, B. Eijsbouts, begin 1900. In de consistorie bevindt zich in de wand een klein zeventiende-eeuws witmarmeren wijwaterbakje met voorstelling van de kruisiging.

Waardering

R.K. St.-Laurentiuskerk, daterend uit 1871-1873 van architect E.J. Margry, met gaaf bewaard interieur en interieuronderdelen is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarden als voorbeeld van een gaaf bewaarde neogothische kerk uit het oeuvre van E.J. Description

A three-aisled, basilical cruciform church constructed in brick with the use of natural stone, executed on a mortared plinth faced with hardstone, beneath a set of gabled and lean-to roofs covered with Maas slate, with a five-sided closed choir, entrance tower on a square base with three stages and a spire and on the right side of the tower a small five-sided stair tower.

The facades are articulated horizontally by drip mouldings and single or in pairs coupled pointed-arch windows with stained glass and topped by a string course. Central nave measuring six bays, separated by buttresses, and a tower bay.

Side walls of transept with three coupled lancet windows above which a natural stone rose window is placed. Tower with in the first stage a large pointed-arch-shaped entrance with double wooden door with a plastered moulding in the archivolt on consoles in which a fanlight is set with three lancet windows and a small quatrefoil. On the transition to the relatively closed second stage machicolations. Third stage with lancet-shaped openings with louvres topped by crockets and on four sides a clock face. The interior of the church is largely executed in exposed brickwork. Three-part wall construction consisting of pointed arches, a blind triforium with three coupled blind basket-arch windows, above which the clerestory, consisting of three lancet windows filled with coloured stained glass. Red-coloured clustered pillars on hardstone bases with varied foliate capitals from which among other things the whitewashed colonettes rise on which the vault springers of the roof rest. The central nave is vaulted by a wooden barrel vault painted in mosaic pattern in soft colours with palmette motifs among others. Choir and side aisles are vaulted in brick. At the rear of the church is the organ gallery with openwork balustrade in neogothic vocabulary. Neogothic main altar in marble and oak wood with biblical representations by the firm Cuypers from 1929. Baptismal chapel with original tile floor designed by E.J. Margry with a baptismal font executed in various types of marble with neogothic cover; the chapel is closed off by a red-gold painted ornamental grille made by J. Geilswijk. Original tile floor in the central nave and side aisles in black and red tile patterns, in the choir in yellow, white and black tile patterns. In the choir still some parts of nineteenth-century wall paintings. Original wooden benches in central and side aisles. Three neogothic confessionals, two of which are partly built into the wall. Five late-nineteenth-century small sculptures, originating from the old pulpit, are placed against the left side wall of the transept. In the small altar table an early-twentieth-century relief with a representation from the former communion rail. Further some nineteenth-century polychromed sacred figures under baldachins (St. Anna van Santen on a painted column with signature on plinth by Iac Verhagen; St. Lawrence likewise on a painted column and St. Caecilia). Multicoloured stained-glass windows with representations of Christ and saints in the choir; other stained-glass windows in the transept and side aisles with stylised patterns in light, soft colours. Further original doors. Mechanical tower clock, B. Eijsbouts, early 1900s. In the vestry is set in the wall a small seventeenth-century white marble holy water stoup with a representation of the crucifixion.

Valuation

R.C. St. Lawrence Church, dating from 1871-1873 by architect E.J. Margry, with well-preserved interior and interior components, is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural historical values as an example of a well-preserved neogothic church from the oeuvre of E.J.
